Some interesting clouds...start of monsoon

There were some very interesting mammatus clouds associated with storms near here on 6/16 (better late than never!). These storms heralded the very welcome (and early) start to monsoon season in the US southwest. There's also a bit of a rainbow the second one. Kevin clouds3b 061622.jpg clouds2c 0616...

Re: Daystar Quark - Single Stack / Double Stack Comparison 12th June

Great images and an interesting comparison.
A question: Obviously there are fundamental differences such as the double limb and sunspot visibility. But, beyond that, to what extent can you approximate the overall appearance of the DS image by altering the processing on the SS image?

Re: Questions regarding use of rear-mounted etalons...

Marty, Thanks very much for that detailed response. Now I understand the issues better. As I've mentioned before I'm trying to educate myself on how to best double stack my Lunt 100THa while hopefully avoiding analysis paralysis. From what I've read the 100THa DSII internal module is not hugely popu...

Great write up Marty - thanks for the link!
I apologize if I missed it but did you ever compare a 4x Powermate vs Baader?

Questions regarding use of rear-mounted etalons...

I have a couple of questions regarding the use of rear-mounted etalons such as the Solar Spectrum or Combo Quark. As I understand it, the internal Lunt pressure tuner modules (which are pretty compact) use collimating and refocusing lenses up- and down-stream of the etalon. Is there any reason in pr...

Those are beautiful details in the chromosphere! Goes to show - you don't need sunspots to get really interesting chromo images.

Re: 73P/Schwassmann-Wachmann meteor shower

Interesting! From New Mexico (USA) I saw about 28 (a few "possibles" out of the corner of my eye) from 4:45-5:45 UT. Then an additional 7 from 6:15-6:45 UT. It looked like it was peaking about when I first went out, so I wish I had started a bit earlier. Conditions were pretty good, but I ...

Re: 2022 Maple Syrup Season

Brian, These articles confirm that volatile phenols produced by burning wood are indeed absorbed directly into grapes. I couldn't find anything about possible effects on tree sap - probably you are right that the bark would provide protection. https://www.awri.com.au/industry_support/winemaking_reso...

Re: 2022 Maple Syrup Season

Brian,

Indeed, I had just been reading some Isley Scotch tasting notes yesterday, so that's no doubt why the crazy idea popped into my head.

Regarding the smoke taint I think you are quite correct - I probably hadn't had enough coffee yet when I asked that!

Re: 2022 Maple Syrup Season

That's a great photo record of the process- very interesting. The raw sap is evidently much less viscous than I would have thought. I didn't realize the sap/syrup ratio was so high. You mentioned the effects of wildfires. Can the sap get "smoke taint" as grapes/wine sometimes do? But, hope...

Re: AR3014 in High Res + DoubleStack Experiment | HA, CaK, Cont | May 20th 2022

Marty, Thanks very much for the detailed explanation! I thought maybe back focus would be an issue. I guess I'm leaning towards trying a Quark at this point. I was figuring on the standard model, but your comment on BF size makes me wonder if the combo with my 4x Power Mate would be better, assuming...

Re: AR3014 in High Res + DoubleStack Experiment | HA, CaK, Cont | May 20th 2022

Marty, Is the Lunt etalon taken from one of the 60mm modular scopes? Does it fit directly into a 2" focuser? I'm just wondering if it's a viable option for double stacking the Lunt 100THa. Maybe the resulting large gap between the two etalons would be an issue?? I'm not keen on the idea of a DS...
