I was so happy that I just randomly caught the strongest flare of the cycle that I wasn’t content with just accepting my bad data 😄 If I knew the flare would come I would of course have used a Barlow lens to get some more detail 😂

Re: New Spectroheliograph construction (based on 102mm refractor)

Hi Jan, Yes, you need a nosepiece to screw onto the threads of the Sol'Ex, a ZWO helical focuser that also screws on to the Sol'Ex, an ND filter to protect the slit from intense focused sun, and probably an extension tube to reach focus (since you will not be using a diagonal). You don't need an L1...

X8.79 flare from 14. May 2024

Hi all, Here’s my results of the huge flare two weeks ago. My camera failed me when the flare appeared and produced glitched / corrupted frames en masse. Also there were some hazy clouds, so there’s some non uniformity in the disk (see the original GIF attached). But I didn’t surrender to my data! I...

Hi Rick, Sorry I totally forgot to reply to you 😄 Thanks for your detailed response! With my Sol'Ex, I also used an 80mm f/5 Orion scope, but stopped it down to 70mm. The images you can get with the Sol'Ex may satisfy you. They are not bad at all (see one of my Sol'Ex images earlier in this thread)....

I haven't tried to derotate it! It's quite easy to do this with Davinci Resolve, it does a great job, even with my not always clean frames. Yours should be straight forward. Let me know if you need any help 😉 I'm recording directly to fast external SSD's. This makes it possible to swap drives if I ...

I would generally recommend starting with the Solex before building something bigger. A 400mm focal length telescope is a good fit for the Solex. The 174MM will work, although the pixels are a bit on the large size. The 178MM actually has pixels that are too small for the classic Solex. Thanks! Yes...
