I wonder, if you took the image at exactly the same minute of each day would the orientation always be the same? this way all you would have to do is overlay the Sun in the same position.

It is always difficult to tell. If the region is actively growing then it is most likely a splitting. A light bridge is also formed when a spot group is in the decay phase. The only way to tell is watch an animation, is it growing and splitting or decaying and splitting. You can make animations of a...
