Re: Daystar solarscout 60 issue.

When I get a chance, I'll open it up and have a look, but not sure this scope is worth the hassle. Reviews seem to suggest even when they work, they are poor performers.

I've taken the BF out, but I can't see any sign of degradation
Looking at a bright light through it, the image looks clear.

Re: Daystar solarscout 60 issue.

Well, after assuming the heater was dead, I had another go today and still no detail. So last option , I replaced the standard diagonal with a Coronado BF, less the ITF. I had a Beloptik UVIR on KG3 on the eyepiece and can see Ha detail, but the image is darker, as expected. I tried multiple heater ...

Re: Daystar solarscout 60 issue.

Hi Martin, it turns green after about 15 minutes on all settings. It starts off orange then turns green. The red light doesn't come on so not showing any issues. There is no indication of Ha detail at any setting.. A visual inspection of BF filter and etalon shows no obvious issue. I can focus on th...

Daystar solarscout 60 issue.

I was recently gifted a Daystar solarscout 60 from a friend who hasn't been able to get any decent views with it since purchasing it second hand a couple months back. The issue is that the heater dial and led light seem to work, but the image doesn't change at all, I can only see sunspots at every s...

Todays prom sketches.

From today as seen through a singlestacked LS100THa, near Sydney Australia. 143 and 204x magnification, seeing was very good, proms had that etched look to them. This one was on the NW limb, orientation of pictures as seen through a BF diagonal, so image reversed to what is shown on GONG.

Thanks James, I enjoy visual and this is just an extension of it, you definitely see more when you concentrate on getting as much detail as you can into a sketch, especially when it is a fast moving prom like this one.

Thanks all for the comments and likes. It was a lucky catch, cloudy all day till 2pm then clouded over again from 4pm. I was supposed to be out all day yesterday, but stayed home and was able to catch this. Was also lucky in 2017 when I managed to capture that years impressive loop prominence.

Todays loop prominence- 13th May 2023

Caught this around 2.15 this afternoon as the clouds cleared, originally had the PST set up and could just make out the start of a few loops in a prominence on the westtern edge of the sun. Took out the Lunt 100 scope and spent about an hour sketching and watching this prom unfold, quite spetacular ...

It's an early model USA made PST that has had the gold front lens replaced. The original lens had the ITF, hence no ITF section with retaining ring , just an extension tube. Not safe for visual use.

Spectacular prom John. Just missed the liftoff this afternoon around 3.30, watched it as a thunderstorm was coming through, it was still anchored to the sun as the storm started, and half hour later it was all over ( the storm and the liftoff). The GONG video at Learmonth shows the whole event.

Re: Visuals of todays proms.

James, for me , the amount of magnification I use depends on the time of day. During summer early morning before 10am is best and afternoons after 3pm. It's rare to use higher mags around noon, I usually top out at 90x. In winter, seeing is usually better after 10am and not as easy to get to higher ...

Replacing a rusted PST ITF with a Maier ITF, where does the rubber O ring go? The old one didn't have one. I installed in this order, ITF, O ring and threaded retaining ring. Is it supplied to stop one over tightening the retaining ring?
