Re: H-alpha SHG imaging from Sept 17

Excellent images, Douglas, with an intelligent setup. About the scans, I'm not sure that the Dec scans are better of AR scans .In my case, that use only the natural flow of sundisk along the slit, AR scans are surely better ,as you stated, in capturing equatorial data. About the IR cut filter in CMO...

Re: Spectroheliograph stacking workflow

This morning I was able to stack 50 frames (-25-25) with no problems.I was careful to cover a few pixels less the the width of the line, and this work very well.

Re: Spectroheliograph stacking workflow

Douglas, the Halpha line in my instruments is from 50 to 60 pixels wide,in a ROI with a overexposed continuum, depending on the gamma and the other settings of acquisition software. The real extension of the line is 60 pixels (1.2 A, considering the dispersion of 0.02 A/pixel of the instrument) .When...

Re: Spectroheliograph stacking workflow

Douglas, very interesting and useful tutorial.
A question: what is the maximun offset and images you can extract with your 3.5 software?
I tried -10:10 in total 20 frames, and is all OK. But if I try -30:30 (60 frames) the system seems not to work.
Did I miss something ?
Cheers

Re: Some UV lines SHG

Thanks, Mark, but the work is still in progress: I hope to add some other interesting lines, Cyanogen are the most important, but at the very limit of QE of my camera

Some UV lines SHG

Given the rainy and decidedly unsuitable day for solar observations, this morning I dedicated myself to a work, still in progress, of showing spectroheliograms of some lines, metallic and not in the near UV. It is a summary and a comparison of the spectroheliograms posted so far on this Forum and els...

Interesting. is your magnometer made of a linear polarizing unit and a 1/4 wave retarder? have you a design of it?

Re: Spectroheliogram Fe1 at 3922

OK, Alexandra: the line , following the paper, must belong to photosphere (high?), but with a feature of srtrong sensitivity to magnetic fields, that explain their emission appearance, due also to the high Landè factor (the Fe1 at 3922 has 2.26).Do you agree?

Re: Ca II I at 8542.1A

I missed this topic, and I'm reading it just now, but sincerely I don't think the 8542 CaII lines (used by professionals , but with dedicated instruments) perform better then the 3933 UV line for amateurs.Apart problems in focusing and with camera QE , you need a IR pass filter (such as Astronomik 8...

Re: Spectroheliogram Fe1 at 3922

Tyhanks, Mark: there are a lot of lines to investigate in the UV, this is only one.I'm planning to visit, over the time, a great part of those compatible with the resolution of my POSS2 UV spectrograph and the QE of my camera.

Spectroheliogram Fe1 at 3922

Spectroheliogram of yesterday in Fe1 at 3922.92 A light, one of the iron lines near the CAIIK, as you can see in the image.
The low magnetic signature suggest the line could be at lower end of Chromosphere. Can anyone has some reference about this?

CaII K3 spectroheliogram of today

A spectroheliogram of this morning in CaIIK3 light with POSS2 spectrograph with a 9 micron chrome slit on a quartz support (therefore highly transmissive of UV) that the friend Douglas Smith kindly gave to me. The result seems good. The conversion soft used was SLM

Re: My first post - SHG build/Lenox Slits

Mike, in my experience, the true, important thing in a SHG is the slit: it will decide the quality of the spectroheliograms, together with the conversion software. Then, if you use a littrow design (in my opinion the easier to handle) you must make a choice between an adjustable air slit (such as tho...
