Russ,
Well done mate!
When a lot of us are clouded out, it always good to see what is happening on the solar disk.
Keep them coming.

Re: Distribution of the prominences
I agree, not very clear....
It suggests the proms are in lower latitudes at minimum, before gradually reaching higher latitudes and polar regions before maximum....

Distribution of the prominences
I was re-reading Patrick Martinez's "The Observer's Guide to Astronomy", Vol 1 On p 73 (I'll try and get it copied...) he shows the distribution of proms throughout the solar cycle. The presented graph shows: 1. There are less proms during solar max 2. The proms follow a similar 11 year cycle - at m...

I get some Newton Rings issues with the ASI 174MM on narrow band H alpha.
I need a T2 tilter to resolve.

Re: Photoshop version and alternatives
David,
Another alternative worth checking out is the latest PaintShop Pro. It's come a loooong way in the past few years and certainly gives PS a run for it's money. Layers, masking etc etc. Try before you buy, once of $$$$

Re: Which camera to choose for full disk imaging
Full disk imaging at longer fl - bigger chips, SSD drives....
I went for the ASI 1600MM, 17.7 x 13.4mm chip with 3.8 micron pixels.
Another option is to use a x0.5 reducer - dropping the fl to around 400mm (giving a solar disk approx 4mm diam.)
There are many other options.

Alexandra, Looking at the CN link you gave.... Using the T thread adaptor seems to have solved the users "reflection" issue.... I don't know what else to suggest... I don't see your central "hot spot" on my flats or images..... EDIT: What do flats look like with the PM and no other filters etc. just...

Certainly a labour of love, but a very satisfying outcome.
Better seeing, and better cloud free access I think would provide a profitable incentive to doing some serious animations....
Neither of which I have

Call this a "proof of concept" Only twenty images with 30 sec interval - SM60DS/ ED80/ ASI 1600 Processed AS3!, Imppg, Corono and convert to GIF in PIPP. If I ever get to observe the sun (!!??) I'll try for a longer animation. (Thanks to Martin S. for all the help and support) Enjoy. trial3image015_...

Re: ASI183 FPS and settings
David, I used an ASI 183MM on my SM60 DS/ ED80 for a while and returned it to ZWO due to "technical issues when imaging solar Ha". They supplied an ASI 1600MM in exchange. I also use a x1.6 Barlow. I use SharpCapture with a zero gain setting of 139 and a gamma of 50. Vary the exposure to bring the h...

Re: Help with 2.5x Powermate
Alexandra,
I use the x2.5 PM most of the time with my ED80 and either the ASI 174 or ASI 1600 for white light, CaK and Ha.
I do use the T thread adaptor and a T2 tilter. The only real issue I have is the NR.

Re: System for identifying locations on the sun
The priority is to image such that north is to to top of the image.
Once you have achieved that (using the telescope movement controls) then GONG and Tilting Sun with give you the solar latitude and longitude.

Using the x1.6 Barlow - OK for White Light and CaK but terrible NR in H alpha. Even the T2 tilter couldn't remove them! CaK shows the AR 2759 heading off and the new AR in the East... Ha showing the same.. Small faint proms SS SM60. Enjoy! Sun_095149.jpg Sun_095100.jpg Sun_095232.jpg Sun_102439f.jpg...

Limb edge in CaK
Just a question.... We know in H alpha depending on the bandwidth, we can pick up the spiculation layer at the solar edge, and when using a wider bandwidth (with a single stack etalon) we get the "double edge" where the background Photosphere shows.... Why don't we see a similar effect when working ...

OK guys...here's the definitive answer on how the PST etalon is actually tuned! After almost 15 years of guessing/ discussion/ debate etc. I managed to get a reply from my contact who has worked with assembly and testing of the PST in production.... I asked the question: The options I think are: 1. ...
