Re: DIY Solar Scintillation Seeing Monitor with FC support

As long as you don't use any optics in front of the naked diode, I think recessing won't make a difference. The Sun is thousands of times brighter than any other light source you'll encounter on a typical day, so no "background light shielding" should be needed.

Re: DIY Solar Scintillation Seeing Monitor with FC support

Now if I understood correctly that menas that if I have a metal case for the detector then I should not ground it to that metal case ? Right, that's my understanding too. I think I can use them for my ongoing project of the Solar guider I am building. That's cool! Also keep an eye on the Planetary ...

Re: DIY Solar Scintillation Seeing Monitor with FC support

It seems clear to me: "not grounded at detector" = "don't try to attach the outer mesh at the detector to an external ground".

Re: First try at a big mosaic and an animation

Very good results, I especially like the animation.

Just a small observation, the prominences in the animation seem abruptly clipped. I suggest letting the lower end of the histogram blend smoothly to black.

Excellent! Especially the spicules, well-defined most of the time. Some great conditions you had there.

Here's mine, works very well: viewtopic.php?f=9&t=19238
Most of my solar images since then have been captured with this setup.

I love the look of this setup, Stu. And how you keep pushing those LS35s to the extreme.

Re: Raw images - a technical question

Hi Bruce, I'm glad you like it. The program recommends the number of iterations between 30 and 70 Or rather, I put that recommendation in judging by my own images. Alexandra favors higher values, so I guess it depends on the setup and the raw material it produces. Keep experimenting until you're sat...

Re: Newbie viewing question

I have the Baader Maxbright binoviewer + a pair of Ploessls, and indeed the difference w.r.t. one-eyed view is very noticeable (more comfortable, details more easily visible); highly recommended if you're into visual observing.

Re: DIY Solar Scintillation Seeing Monitor with FC support

Finally! Two nice cloudless days, and I could at last verify the values reported by SSM. After attaching the sensor so it would follow the Sun: moco1.jpg moco2.jpg moco3.jpg i started data collection, and captured a 50-second video at 20 fps. It would seem the SSM works correctly, because on a joint...

Re: DIY Solar Scintillation Seeing Monitor with FC support

As was to be expected, I haven't had imaging opportunities since finishing version 1 of my SSM  In the meantime, I bought a 1.3" mono OLED display and learned to use it; also, version 2 of the board is almost built, and new Arduino code is ready. Not that having a seeing graph is particularly ...

Re: Gain Recommendation for ZWO 174mm

For Gamma setting: i would only use NEUTRAl (linear) gamma. If not the captured signal will be crippled. Correction can and should be done in post processing. As for "crippling", this depends on the target. For prominences, I indeed use only neutral gamma. But for surface-only videos I turn the gam...

Re: 18 August prom animation

Great catch! I took 14 images every 5 minutes. It was a real pain to stack everything together With a few tricks it shouldn't be. Most stackers have batch mode (AS!3 - just select all videos, drag and drop them on program window; in AviStack2, Stackistry, select and open multiple files). Then I sugg...

Re: New here / AR12670 whitelight using EdgeHD11

That's a cracking image, Laura! Everything is nicely resolved. Though I would show some more of umbral details, there should be something to see, like e.g. in http://astrob.in/22917/0/, http://astrob.in/23205/D/; that is, if they weren't clipped during recording. You might be interested in Piotr's a...

Re: Realtime Seeing Filter idea - to benefit Altair GPCAM / Hypercam owners and others

Joe, yes I did. At least the quality analysis phase would be straightforward (it's just an iterated box blur filter and subtraction). Though I'd rather use GLSL (OpenGL shaders) which is widely supported. There's no OpenCL support yet in Radeon open source drivers on Linux (that's what I use).
