Re: November 9 2020 Observations

I don’t really intend to replace my visual exploits with imaging but use imaging to support it, much like I use GONG and SDO now though they will remain valuable because they show me what’s going on beforehand. I could see imaging replacing descriptions though if I got good at this. Images can easi...

Thank you all for your further encouragement. :bow The black line with a blob [Solar Liquorice Lollipop?] is real enough. :D At least in the usual, imaging sense. A short lived, dense filament perhaps? I shall have to check the videos on my laptop around the time to check for duration. Fortunately I...

Re: ZWO ASI178MM Monochrome Camera

I have already figured out how critical focusing is with digital solar photography. Ha is a pain to focus using my iPhone and DSLR and even white light lacks the sharpness my eye can see. I use a large 25" computer monitor with my 15.6" high res. laptop. This provide a huge image on a low reflectio...

I also agree on holding off on the tilt adapter unless you find you really need one. ______________________________________ Thanks for the heads up on Exposure V Gain. :bow My theory is that a shorter exposure will freeze thermal agitation more than a little Gain will ruin an image. Re: 8.11.2020 Contra-rotating on the spot.

Thanks Franco. :bow Like everybody else I am completely at the mercy of the seeing conditions. Today was continuously sunny but with some whiteness towards the sun. Transparency was reasonable but soft and masked by thermal agitation [shaking] all day. I have seen far better transparency on the moni...

8.11.2020 Contra-rotating on the spot.

A clear and sunny morning with better seeing than of late. I followed Mark's and Alexandra's suggestions and rotated my etalon relative to the camera. Sadly I had lost the tuning in the process and produced some very weird images. I even tried a 16 bit capture. Finally, I re-tuned and now have the "...

Re: 4.11.2020 AR2781 in modest seeing.

Did you ever try clocking the etalon? Hi Mark. I had a chance to try this today during appalling seeing conditions. Rotating the etalon independent of the camera rotates off axis illumination. Rotating the camera alone rotates its own off axis illumination. So, a bit of contra-rotation and I may ha...

6.11.2020 AR2781 through boiling mush!

Sheer luck I captured this much detail.
I was bored waiting for the cloud to clear.
So I inverted my PST etalon element to see if it helped.
It did! :D

Re: 4.11.2020 AR2781 in modest seeing.

Thanks Mark. :bow The Teflon tape wrap of the etalon elements has helped even out the illumination but the appearance is strangely flat. I have tried repeated retuning and physical tilting but it hasn't helped so far. I tried rotating the full aperture D-ERF on the OTA. No change. Then I rotated the...

I just wish these images had been better. Fierce, thermal 'boiling' all day.

Flares can be a "nuisance" for overwhelming an image with a blank white area.

It just looks so wrong! :D

The spot group is well seen in white light.
