Re: Planning my first PST mod and need some help

UPDATE Today I managed to have an hour or so, to do some more Visual tests - Sky was clear enough for ab bit. For what I gathered: Problem 1 - Focusing I added my 35mm Revelation 2" extension [to the setup in above image - before the Etalon] and it did focus a bit better with focuser about 12mm out...

Re: Planning my first PST mod and need some help

Here is an image I tried various distances for PST eyepiece holder and front 2" Tuner adaptor. The focusing was around 31mm focuser out - going further back or forward was going out of focus. The focus was not 'clearly' totally in focus ... I am pleased I do not need to get lenses out of Etalon, the...

Re: Planning my first PST mod and need some help

ADDITION: while having dinner and talking with my wife, I just remembered one 'possibly important thing - in my case' ... do I have to take the lens/lenses OFF the Tuner? If so, tomorrow I will get a couple of plastic sealed bags from workshop and at night take them off and mark with pencil which o...

Re: Planning my first PST mod and need some help

At present, I have already dismounted all parts and already done a SCT focuser Mod and it is very nice, but with a 'wobble' PST eyepiece into an adaptor. See this post: https://solarchatforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=26069#p235640 I am waiting for AOK Swiss adaptors posted yesterday and then I will play ...

Re: Planning my first PST mod and need some help

BOLDED answers ... to help anybody else reading. Hi I am in the process of doing the same PST 'Combat'. Now I have a new ITF, things are 'clear' ! What I wish to do is the obvious mod to use PST as a Quark and use it on various scopes, including my AR152 F/6.5 My 'practical' questions: 1. Do I need...

Re: Planning my first PST mod and need some help

Hi
Just noticed your reply.

I thought it was not a reply ... there is no bold or italic to discern my typing to yours.

I will copy it it and do it, then I will see your answers clearly.

Thanks

Re: Planning my first PST mod and need some help

I am 'slowly' getting along [time permitting] to understand 'the works' by testing and already the SCT focuser mod is better than PST standard setting - even using bath-tub splash-proof insulators as spacers within 1.25" adaptor to hold PST eyepiece holder! :P With SCT focuser I already got rid of t...

Re: Improvements to your PST!

Got other one but only managed to check it out quickly - did not have time + weather rubbish and this one 'seems' to work.
Next time I have steadier weather, I will test it properly. I am no expert of optics, but as I understand it is to do with 2x2 FL and this one seems to mach PST better.

Re: Improvements to your PST!

... and the reason I had problems might be its focal length!
I ordered another one, let's see what happens ... if no results, it means I wasted a total of £. 50!
Pffff !

Re: PST Stage 1 + AR152, AR102, 72ED etc. next steps ...

Here is one of the images I managed to take with SCT focuser one and wobbly nosepiece holder - nothing special, also a lot hazy. But surface I believe it is clearer! I 'think' this was with a 2x Barlow (with also 2x Barlow lens end screwed onto camera) - not sure ... https://astronomo.space/my-image...

Re: Improvements to your PST!

I tried a 2x2 [used on a Canon camera] and I cannot focus. Tried everything within my knowledge to focus. I just cannot. Last week I also managed to attach a SCT 10:1 focuser [https://solarchatforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=26069#p235640] I rarely used, in place of the PST one and it is very good - view ...

Re: PST Stage 1 + AR152, AR102, 72ED etc. next steps ...

I forgot to ask something: 1. The Bresser Messier AR-90/900 OTA Optical Tube Assembly https://www.telescopehouse.com/telescopes/telescopes-by-brand/brand-bresser-telescopes/bresser-messier-ar-90-900-ota-optical-tube-assembly.html , do I need to adjust tube length or not? 2. Do I still have to take l...

Re: PST Stage 1 + AR152, AR102, 72ED etc. next steps ...

Thanks ... I did use 3 blocks of timber wrapped in Gaffa/Cloth tape on the ring over the PST tube to avoid scratches! I will have to find time to play a bit more with it. It is much brighter and I might end up using the 7nm Filter all the time - if not too narrow. One thing I do not understand ... s...

Re: PST Stage 1 + AR152, AR102, 72ED etc. next steps ...

I got it working! Far better focusing + more light getting through. I tried it yesterday with camera too, but although sky was clear, it was quite hazy - today might be clearer and I am at work! My only problem remains the how to attach PST eyepiece holder onto 'whatever' can hold it as it is a non ...

Re: PST Stage 1 + AR152, AR102, 72ED etc. next steps ...

OK, understood. Just slightly off-topic ... This morning I 'thought' I had some SUN out and it was out then clouded up by the time I was ready to 'try' a Revelation or GSO 10:1 focuser in place of the original PST prism, using PTFE tape and fits well! I had all OK, but the ITF with the whole PST ori...

Re: PST Stage 1 + AR152, AR102, 72ED etc. next steps ...

Oops!
I just thought about a 63mm or maybe a 80mm ERF used on a Meade SCT 10" Classic [old one].
Using it off-axis with PST ?

I did get decent images in white light years ago and I was only playing with it!

Maybe 63mm too small for a F/10 254mm 2500mm FL ?

Re: PST Stage 1 + AR152, AR102, 72ED etc. next steps ...

Hi Thank you very much for taking the time to reply. It is almost as clear as daylight now and I am guessing I will not need to modify AR152 inward as I might use a smaller ERF [90-100mm] and reach focus? Sorry for late reply as usual... I thought forum was set to auto-subscribe to get email notific...

ADDITION - I failed to mention I will use the Altair 178M camera I am already using with PST Hi again! Sorry for being 'slow' and possibly thick. My plan: 1. I think, first thing is to get the 2" adaptor for PST - so I am ready to play with Stage 1 [I guess it is called?] 2. Then get a 100mm ERF [w...

Re: Planning my first PST mod and need some help

Hey Mauro, Some PST's are a bear to open up and are glued. I have opened two of them now. One was hard. I scratched it up good. The other was easy, it just came apart. You can use things like a heat gun or hair dryer to help warm up bonds (glue) and gently work things until they give. The most impo...

Re: Planning my first PST mod and need some help

Hi Mauro, have you tried unscrewing the gold tube by hand? I've had some PSTs that just unscrew with little force. If you're going to use your existing scopes you will need to get them working at f10 for the PST etalon. Sorry for very late reply, I went on holiday and then back to work, I am now ge...

Re: Planning my first PST mod and need some help

Finally found a little time to look and yes the best tool is the car oil filter tool [the one with a belt to avoid scratches], to remove PST tube. Which way? The normal anticlockwise movement? With left hand holding body [or vice with padding!] and right hand turning left or towards me if parallel i...
