From Monday 15 April - Zooming in on the spot

Not fantastic, but the best I have been able to get lately. Not too many peeks at the Sun around here
All images are with a Lunt LST80Ha

Re: Can't get focus!!

I have a Lunt 80, but things should work pretty much the same with the 50. On the Lunt scopes, the drawtube attached to the blocking filter is an important part of the focus mechanism. In order to more quickly set up my equipment, I made reference marks on my draw tube using a colored pencil. First ...

Re: GAMMA SETTINGS QUESTION

Thanks Alexandra. Today I wanted to show what happens with a camera that does have a gamma adjustment. The seeing conditions had deteriorated from yesterday and it was difficult to get a stable display that I could use to show small changes. In some cases I had to wait a significant time between sho...

Re: GAMMA SETTINGS QUESTION

Matry, Sorry it took so long to get back to this. I had to wait for the Sun in order to grab some screen shots. We're actually lucky. I haven't seen much of the Sun for weeks. The images below were made using SharpCap. Obviously, there will be differences with other acquisition programs, but the con...

Re: GAMMA SETTINGS QUESTION

The FLIR KB note makes some good points "Thus, using the minimal amount of gain that will still allow the A/D to saturate will help maximize the camera's dynamic range." This is the point that Valery was making. You want to use that whole histogram. BUT, once data values are clipped, they are perman...

Re: A Grand Post-Processing Thread!

Bruce, it is my understanding that for (our) solar imaging, when sharpening a stack, we need to remove the blurriness caused by 1) atmospheric turbulence (even though the stacker tries to choose the sharpest image fragments, it has to use some blurrier ones too), and 2) shift-and-add procedure (whi...

Re: A Grand Post-Processing Thread!

I struggle with deconvolution too, not because I don't understand what convolution is and does, but because we are handed a pile of deconvolution kernels with no guidance as to which sort of situations they were built for. Deconvolution is an inherently unstable process. It is a process of division....

Re: Something brewing Dec 9th

I saw it as well when we had a tiny opening in the cloud deck. Quite bright, but still very small. Indeed it did remind me of the beginnings of that big loop, one that I was fortunate enough to see nearly the full development of. Perhaps Derek might catch something for us in the morning

Re: Impact of telescope height on the seeing

Very interesting results and very well presented.

What do you feel might explain that much difference? Dust in the air layer just above the ground or perhaps some other form of scattering phenomenon? Thermal currents close to the ground?

Re: Maybe the wrong place

There are also those quick car jump power sources that hold enough juice to jump start a car. Way more than needed for a Quark, but if you're driving a tracking mount, a camera with cooler, a computer and perhaps a convenience item here or there, they'll cover all that and more. Small and light, the...
