Very slow
I'm not complaining or anything but I have noticed gradually over the last few months the forum seems to have got slower and slower. It doesn't matter whether I am at work or at home, or using IE, Chrome or Safari it just takes ages with the whirly circle to get between posts and can take up to 1 minute to post a message. So to read and reply to 20 posts it can take up to 1 and half hours for a session, that's a big chunk of my day. But I don't want to miss out on anyone's work but it is getting a bit of a pain really and I was wondering whether I was the only one or a more general problem.

Re: Very slow
No particular problem here. The large numbers of smiley graphics, avatar images etc. does slow the thing down a little but it shouldn't be enough to cause noticeable degradation on a broadband link with reasonable transmission speed.
I did have an issue with ALL sites with a system running Windoze which turned out to be related to Windows Update running at high priority when failing to communicate with the MS web site due to an apparent fault at the MS end. Moral, never allow any software to update automatically, or even to check for updates without asking explicit permission to do so on each occasion.

Re: Very slow
well, the software is Kunena forums on a Joomla platform. The only things that I can do is to go in and empty the cache of old posts and reboot the servers occasionally.
When we talked about buying some more advanced software a few weeks ago everyone wanted to keep it simple like it is now.
I timed this post after I submitted it on my COMcast cable modem operating at 150MBps from Atlanta and it took less than a second to post.
I take your concerns very seriously as I want it to be an enjoyable experience for people to come here but I am limited as to what I can do.
This site http://www.speedtest.net allows you to get a reading on your current internet speed.
Mine tested at about half its maximum speed at 7:30AM here in downtown Atlanta.
I don't know if this is your problem but it would be worth taking a few readings at different times during the day to see if it has something to do with your internet service or our website.
While your doing that I will go in and reboot everything and clean up the cache to see if it helps.

At home we get anywhere between 2 - 25 Mbps.
At the University we are supposed to be on super speed fibre optic wotnot and it doesn't seem to make much difference.

Re: Very slow
I just emptied all the cache files (over a million) and rebooted the remote servers at 1243GMT. I also sent an email to the NATCA IT guys to see if they could diagnose any issues on their end to speed it up some. Im sorry fore the long waits.

Re: Very slow
well, .22MBps means .0275 megabytes of information able to upload at optimal speed. This equals 27,500 bits or 27.5Kb per second.
If you upload a 1MB image at these speeds it should take you 37 seconds if everything runs perfectly.
Does this sound about right for your speeds?

Thank you so much Stephen
I must say I am zipping about now between posts, but it is the posting of a message (with no picture) which takes ages. Maybe the government is checking what the foreigners are chatting about it does seem to be an overseas issue.

Re: Very slow
ya, I see that too Alexandra. It takes me about 15 seconds to post any text or image post. Everything else is now lightning fast.
I did notice that there were 1400+ posts that users had deleted without actually "permanently deleting" just now and have removed all of those. I don't know what effect this will have.
I am waiting for my IT guy at NATCA to do some changes too. Please bare with it for a while until we see what can be done.

I have been finding the same behavior- it's reply speed that is slow- NOT upload speeds. A 5 word reply has been taking a long to to post - 10-30 secs or more. I am on a 30 Mbps line. It wasn't like this a few months back.

The above post just took 24 secs to complete - at 50 Mbps! It's the database software that's the issue.

Hi Stephen
I'm also convinced, it is the database. Slow speed for a new post, fast speed for editing an existing post

Re: Very slow
yes, I have it narrowed down to new post creation in the database. Don't know if anything can be done or to though. Other than deleting 80,000 posts or so. Well see soon.

Re: Very slow
Hi Stephen
BTW
the forum would get at least 10 - 20 more posts if the pic of the day is posted here first as a thread. Just thinking how about reaching the 100'000 line as soon as possible ;-)

Re: Very slow
Stephen, it seems to be getting worse. Last week I had an average of around 25-35 seconds to post a message. This week it is now up to an average of 90-120 seconds per post. It's killing me

it is getting slower for me as well - being down-under I thought the electrons would get here quicker with gravity but apparently not one post i put up yesterday took quite a few minutes to load
EDIT - it took 30 odd seconds to post this text
