Sunlit Jupiter

Post by MapleRidge »

Hi everyone...

Clouds and rain have put astronomy on hold here the past week, but it did clear last night and I went out to see what I could get with Jupiter. I was surprised to see the seeing was very good (for my location), and the images turned out very well.

Out of the dozens of videos captured, I put together this set of RGB/IR images taken roughly an hour apart. These were through the C14@ f11 and ASI290MM camera. The RGB filters are an Astrodon set and the IR is from the Baader filter set.

I think these are the best Jupiter images I've taken in many years!

Hope you like them,

Thanks Alexandra :bow

It is always great to catch the few nights of very good seeing and have targets like Jupiter or Mars to take advantage of the conditions.

The C14 is in the large roll off observatory (on the EM400 mount)...I've had it for at least 10 years (I can't remember exactly when I got it). Your post on the tri-Bhatinov mask lead me to get one and it made a huge improvement in collimation. Thanks for the nudge ;)

Hi Brian,
You did great, these are some of the best photos of Jupiter I've seen. Bravo! Bakhtinov's mask is a brilliant invention. As far as I know, Pavel did not even begin to patent it.

Thanks for your feedback Ivan :bow

The masks are a great tool for deep sky imaging, and the Tri version is an excellent way to get collimation fine tuned. Hats off to Pavel for his development of it :bow

Hello Brian !
Very nice work Brian ! Lovely imaging.
I was trying out my Jupiter with my small telescopes. I am only using small refractors and found the 90mm F10 achromat gave poorer images than the 70mm F6 with a x2 barlow. I only had a Logitec C270 modified webcam though. Anyhow, I found some colour fringes on the west and eastern limbs. Despite colour alignment and balance and ensuring alignment, you still see them. I also worked on some Hubble space telescope images from the Hubble legacy archive, and spent days processing it, and still there is colouring at the edges.. I notice there is some on your lovely images of Jupiter as well.

Do you know what causes this ?
Any processing solutions ?
(I also saw some problems on a printed copy of Jupiter from the Hubble telescope on a poster from Astronomy Now)...!!

Thanks.
Magnus

Hi Magnus...

Thanks for your comments on my images :bow

For a 70mm scope, you pulled up some nice cloud details in your image!!!

I will try to answer your questions on the images, though I can only speak first hand for my own. I have posted the image you used for reference, and added a vertical line on the left side and arrows to a couple of features. Use these for reference, as I am not 100% sure which coloring you refer to.
Jupiter-20140421-HST-ED70-20210923-Magnus_v2.jpg

First, the limb in all images will be dimmer, and seems to have a bluer appearance on Jupiter due to limb shortening. The limb to the left of my vertical line shows this effect due to the reflected sunlight being reflected on a shallower angle than that the light closer to the central meridian. The blue wavelengths scatter more light as well, adding to the diffuse blue appearance.

Another source of colour differences is that the disk of Jupiter appears to have slightly different diameters in different wavelengths due to the different gases at the upper levels reflecting/absorbing wavelengths of light differently. I have always thought Jupiter to look a bit 'fatter' in blue light than red, so in the final image the edges are biased a bit more blue. Same effect with combining separate filtered images vs a one shot colour camera.

Diffraction of the incoming light by our atmosphere causes the focused wavelengths of light o be slightly spread out relative to each other, and is a greater issue with one shot cameras as the captured image has the spectrum spread out. Combining separate RGB exposures aligns the colors, but an atmospheric dispersion corrector (ADC) greatly improves the one shot cameras.

Another source of colour gradients can be the result of Jupiter rotating between the R, G, B images and when you align the cloud features the edges of the separate colour disk to make the features sharp the edges may not have a full set of colors...blue hangs over one edge, red over the other. Not sure if I am explaining this right, but I hope it makes sense. The red edge along the left limb where the arrows are is an example of how this might appear (but this is a very distinct line in the Hubble shot which I don't believe is due to rotation). I'm sure the Hubble folk held a tighter timeline in their exposures than I. Aggressive processing will amplify these sources of color.

It is usually pretty hard for me to change filters and capture the images using the filters I have (Red, Green, Blue, 2xIR bands, Methane, UV) in less than 10 minutes which is about 2-3x longer than rotation effects will show up. More than 1/2 that time span is the narrow band-pass filters (Methane/UV/IR 880nm). The R/G/B/IR680nm filters use short exposures so they fall in the timeline better, but usually stretched out more than ideal. There is software to 'de-rotate' planetary images to align the common features in each image, but that is another level of image capture/processing.

Of the four possible sources listed, which do you feel points to the features/artifact that you see? If anyone else has answers please shout them out ;)

Brian

Hello Brian,

Yes, it is the left most limb and also right most limb. There is slight but obvious colouring of the edges which is also visible on a Hubble image of Jupiter in Astronomy Now, and yours.

My Jupiter was with a ED70 (doublet refractor); 420mm F, with a x2 barlow (basic barlow). I also DRIZZLED the image x1.5 in Autostakkert which gave a larger image. I think its quite good, much better than I expected.

I will need a better camera and a higher Jupiter, filters, ADC etc etc. ( plus a much larger diameter scope).... !!!

Thanks for the possible theories of why the colours are like they at the limbs, I never thought of those possibilities !!! Jupiter is too dynamic and gaseous for SIMPLE imaging !!!!!

(does anyone think ADAPTIVE Optics could be solved with computer programming image analysis ???) to overcome the atmospheric dynamics distortions of seeing ??

Thanks.
I will study your response and get back to you.

Magnus
