A few more nature shots

Post by MapleRidge »

Spring was slow to warm up here, and very dry and cold until about 2 weeks ago. This has delayed the greening of the landscape and the typical spring flowers were slow to show as well.

I've spent the past 2 or 3 Sundays in the bush cutting firewood and found a few samples of the spring woodland flowers to share.

White Trillium is the official flower of the Province of Ontario...most springs the woodland floors are white with their flowers:

A rare version of the trillium is this red flowerd sample:

The Trout Lilly is one of the first flowers to show...often see them at the tail end of the maple syrup season when cleaning up in the bush:

The fruit trees in the back yard flowered last weekend, but only for a few days...might have been too hot (over 30C for about 4 days straight):

While scouting fields at my brothers on afternoon a few of the curious dry cows paid a visit:

The heat wave ended on Thursday as a cold front rolled in with rain and thunder storms:

I think that all the reflected sunlight I captured in recent weeks posted...hope you enjoy them.

I do like them very much indeed :hamster:
Interesting about the Trillium, is that where they are from! Every year on Gardener's world they talk about Trilliums as the 'must have' spring garden plant. Very trendy! but can you buy them, no! I have never seen them for sale and yet I keep my eye out all the time at garden centres. The red flowered one is the number one trendy Trillium, and then I find out that you get them in the wild under the Maple trees

I love your pictures Brian :)

Thanks for your feedback on the images Alexandra and Derek...much appreciated :bow

Alexandra, I have never seen trilliums for sale anywhere here, but they do not like being disturbed...human activity in the forest/woodlots that have cattle grazing in the past tends to kill them off. I think its the compaction of the soil and disturbing the top-growth that affects them. Seldom seen outside of woodlots, occasionally in a roadside ditch in the shade. When I was a kids we tried to transplant some to a flowerbed at the farm from the sugar bush but I don't remember them ever getting established, even though it was in a shady area.

I have also seen a variegated version with the white/red blended in stripes and blotches besides the pure red or white version.

I said before I haven't seen them for sale, but I do see places that sell online.

Glad you enjoyed the pics Derek :bow

In your version of 'winter' I expected the bees would still be active, but maybe with less hive activity or reduced pollen sources...but I'm guessing ;)
