Noctilucent Clouds 22nd June 2020 02:12 UTC

Post by Montana »

Fantastic Noctilucent Clouds this morning. I wanted to wake at 2am but I woke at 2:55am instead (not bad for self waking). I watched a super display, but by 3.30am they were gone and the birds had started singing. This image was taken at 02:12 UTC 22/06/2020 and was a handheld merge of three images. The extent was very wide and stretched to about 80 degrees above me. It was also taken through the bedroom window. I have lots of images on the Canon to look at later and maybe make a timelapse. But here is the handheld image for starters :)

Very nice and dramatic feel to it!

I have to admire you for getting up at such an hour. I've been wanting to do it as well (for capturing Jupiter/Saturn/Mars); but once I'm comfortable in my bed, those plans go right out the window

Beautiful image, Alexandra. I’m hoping the predicted good weather gives clear views this week.

You did really well getting up at that time of the day :)

Some more pictures from the Canon at 02:06 UTC and 02:26UTC

and an animation. Thanks Stuart for the GIMP tutorial as Photoshop failed in a very miserable way for the animation. It ran beautifully in Photoshop but the Gifs had terrible pattern noise in whatever setting I used. GIMP has worked well but there is some strange artifacts in there but insignificant compared to Photoshop :) The animation is 02:02-02:35 UTC

Excellent, Alexandra. Glad the tutorial was of some use. NLCs have a unique ethereal beauty, which you’ve captured wonderfully in these images and animation.

The weather forecast is looking good for the next few days, so hopefully I’ll be able to see some NLCs for myself for the first time this season.

WoW, I haven't seen Noctilucent clouds in many years. They are pretty rare here at 35 north latitude. I have seen an Aurora only once. Red. Back in 1981 if I remember right. They are even rarer at my latitude.

Great shots, Alexandra, and a spectacular animation.
I’ve never seen these in real life. They certainly are interesting and beautiful.
Cheers.
