18th July 2020 COMET NEOWISE c/2020 F3 - latest

Post by EGRAY_OBSERVATORY »

At 01:11BST/00:11z, I was able to get a few images of the Comet, after a wasted-journey trying to find a better-spot with a darker-sky to improve on my last image - posted recently.

Unfortunately it seems that roadside-bushes are not being trimmed and I didn't fancy doing much walking in the dark, so returned to the observatory
and had to put-up with some local light pollution at that low elevation above the horizon.

Anyhow, I have to further process the other images to find which is the best of and if any better than this one, will post it here...

It is only likely to be a Mk.1 Eyeball visible from a very dark-site, but low-powered binoculars will likely assist to seeing this, whilst as is now about magnitude 3.09 (increasing) it will need a clear-sky without haze etc...

Further North from S.E.England it will presumably be higher in the sky - lucky people up there...

BEST WISHES & KEEP SAFE...

Terry

A very interesting article about how the Comet is changing and developing into quite a rare-event.
This can be seen and with close-up images on spaceweather.com website of today's date (18th July'20).

Cheers
Terry

Hi,

Very good. Yesterday I was able to see it with the binoculars for the first time. Very faint but I guess due to the pollution in the air.

Thanks vm Rainer.
I'm a little surprised that you could see it from your location, so what sort of elevation was it for you ??

And yes unless the sky is really clear and good seeing (dark site), its' magnitude now would make it difficult to spot without binos.

Cheers

Hi Terry,

It was about 13° altitude and in the next days it will steadily go higher with about 3.5° per day but OK with diminishing brightness but then I will be able to get it with the telescopes when it reaches about 22° to 24° altitude then it will have mag 3.9

Thanks Rainer for the chart and information.
I'm still a little confused as I thought (wrongly) that if the Comet was in our northern skies at an altitude of around 10-degrees at present at night,
that locations further south of S.E.England would find it at lower altitudes and even hidden from view by their horizons.

I will have to work on that scenario and learn something from it...

Cheers

Well done Terry :bow great to hear the roadside verges haven't been cut, great for wildlife, insects, flowers and butterflies and a complete waste of money to cut :hamster: I wish Cheshire East council would take note from your council :)

I managed a view of the comet this morning, first time to have clear skies since last weekend and I was very disappointed to see how much it had faded. Last weekend it was a beautiful sight with the naked eye, this morning I couldn't find it until I had taken a 15 second exposure! such a pity it won't be long lived. I am so glad I saw it last weekend.

Thanks Brian, Alexandra and everyone for your replies.

Alexandra, indeed you are quite correct about the lack of hedgerow-cutting in my area.
In fact the 30-miles journey to a particular site on a hill and usually clear of people and vehicles, was upon arrival found to have several cars, most parked within a turning area for cars at the end of that road, making it almost impossible to turn around to go back down the long-narrow road.

Specifically there was one car parked alongside the only part where the hedge was low enough, so I decided to find the other possible sites on the journey back to home, which as said were no longer suitable for 10-degree above horizon views.

If from within my observatory, NEOWISE could be acquired with the Orion ED80 telescope or even with the Panasonic G2 camera attached, then that would be the way to go, but the various positions and altitudes of the comet were simply not visible due to a neighbour's shed-roof which just foiled me from those views.
So had to put up with taking single-shots with the digital-camera, which where of course were no-where near some of those excellent images - already posted here.

CLEAR SKIES
Terry
