Landscapes and critters

Post by JochenM »

In absense of the sun and/or acceptable conditions here lately, there's always other interesting things to keep one occupied.

Just a few landscapes and little critters from the last week or two.

Thanks for looking!

Hi Jochen,

Excellent images especially the critters. Do you know the difference between a Damselfly and a Dragonfly ? :)

Thanks, Rainer.

Ah, the typical question :D Honestly, it can be tricky to keep them apart sometimes (and I'm sure I get it wrong often enough). I basically just try to use the physical differences (size/length of the torso/wings/eyes).

Hi Jochen,

Very easy. Dragonfly can not fold the wings as the Damselfly does ... That easy ...

These are beautiful images Jochen :hamster: we went for a walk on Saturday and all the Heather was in bloom and the hills purple, it was lovely.

We learned all about the differences of damselflies and dragonflies on Springwatch/self isolating bird club this year. A dragonfly holds its wings out flat and it's eye goes all round it's head so it has 360 vision. A damselfly folds it's wings upright like a butterfly and it's eyes are on the ends of it's head like on the end of a horizontal bar. Because of this difference they are able to see in a different way and so have a different feeding niche to the dragonfly. Amazing creatures also when you think they are relatively unchanged since the dinosaurs (apart from being smaller - less oxygen about). Your images show such beautiful refraction of sunlight giving rise to wonderful colouration too :bow

Thanks Alexandra.

The heather shot was also taken during a walk with my girlfriend (she's into photography as well). Always an enjoyable outing to be able to go on.

The downside was that we caught a massive downpour literally 2 minutes away from the car. But ah well, worth it :D
