Maple Ridge Observatory - Autumn Pics, Part 2

Post by MapleRidge »

Part 2 of this post will highlight some of the pics of the wildlife that has been frequenting the area since harvest began. We have corn stubble across the road after silage was harvested, and soybean stubble around the house and observatory. Like the landscape photos in Part 1, the camera is a Canon 60D fitted with either a 70-300mm or 17-250mm zoom lens.

The photos are mainly of migratory birds like Canada Geese and Sandhill Cranes, but a Red Tailed Hawk was hunting in the soybean field after harvest was completed last Monday afternoon.
This Red-tailed Hawk was hunting for lunch in the soybean stubble soon after the combine pulled out. I was not far away when it landed and was fortunate to have my camera with me

The corn stubble across the road has been attracting Canada Geese and Sandhill Cranes for the past 3 weeks. Most days both species they count in the hundreds...don't be fooled by the pics, they have close to 200 acres to spread across ;)

There are almost as many nature photographers driving up from Toronto everyday to photograph the cranes...there is some expense camera equipment in tow too

Hope everyone enjoys these. I'll post more as time goes on. Wild turkeys will be the next to appear.

Wow! I so wish I was there :hamster: amazing images :bow I expect the red tailed hawk was catching the poor mice whose homes were destroyed.

Thanks Alexandra :bow

I'd rather the hawk get the mice before they try to make winter homes in my garage or observatory ;)

Wonderful wildlife photography, Brian. I often see Canada Geese here. I see them often fly over on their way to warmer wintering grounds. We have wild turkey and Redtail Hawk here too.
