Mars on Oct 6th

Post by MapleRidge »

Hi everyone...

Between clouds and work solar sessions have been limited, but it cleared after dark last night and I was able to get out to view and image Mars.

This season has probably had the best views of Mars I've ever had, and the images are not to disappoint either.

The attached images are through mu C14 @ f15 and ASI462MC camera and using Astrodon RGB filters for the colour data and Baader IR680nm filter for the IR image.

Take advantage of any chance to view mars while it is close...and dust free

Take care all,
Brian

Thanks vm Brian for the fab images and presentation of this rare event.

I went-out to view mars at a similar time this morning, but the seeing was poor to fair with a thin haze, so not worth setting-up, but excellent to see your results..

Jozef and Terry...

Thank you for your comments on the Mars image. Nice to see it this time round since the last apparition was clouded in dust!

Oh my goodness Brian, are you sure these aren't from Hubble  I can actually see Mars for the first time last night here in Lyme Regis but I have no telescope :( I can't see it at home :( it does look beautiful.

Thank Alexandra...your comments are very much appreciated :bow

What is in the way that you can't see Mars from home...trees? I'd gave thought it would clear them at some point, afterall the sun follows the dame basic path along the ecliptic. Is it a case of limited viewing window?

Brian,
I got some really nice views of Mars over the weekend using my friend Clay's TeleVue 85 and SharpStar 94 EDPH and my Celestron NextStar 102 and Astro-Tech AT72EDII. I could easily see Syrtis Major, Hellas and many other features you have shown here including the tiny polar cap. It's the best view I have had since 1988. Back then I had several excellent seeing nights back to back and the detail was outstanding. 400x even revealed ice/cloud tops revealing the Tharsis volcanoes and Olympus Mons. In a 6" F8 newtonian reflector! I could see detail in the polar caps! My eyes were probably a bit better in those days too.

Your views are excellent!! BIG thumbs up!!

James

It is too low, like the Sun in winter. Then it needs to be the wee small hours to be visible from the bedroom window ;)
