Fascinating pictures, I was trying to work out what he has in his mouth in picture 1? looks like a big slug :)

Rainer, Herons eat just about anything that fits down their neck. In the UK we have some pretty grizzly pictures of Herons eating giant rats.

That is a typical of Heron here, I remember my friend writing to me to tell me all about how she had watched a Heron do that in front of her while she was out riding her horse. It was in a dyke and had the largest rat she had ever seen. They are master rat catchers, much better than cats :)
