Conjunction 20th December

Post by marktownley »

Did a rare bit of night time astronomy, I guess a 1 in 800 year conjunction is worth a shot. I used my 'new' 177/1200L refractor from Bresser, a 1.6x magnimax barlow and the FLIR IMX174 grasshopper camera. I stacked 512 out of 4000 and coloured sepia.

I got the scope principally for solar, and will likely run it in a 120/f10 configuration and will reserve it for CaK when the seeing is excellent and i'm able to use the 200mm HaT for Ha work. I looked visually at the moon and there was a lot of blue halo which may not bode well for CaK, but it will be several more months before the conditions allow me to properly test it.

All good fun!

Mark

Wow!! that's incredible Mark :bow :bow :bow

I didn't even try, I sat for an hour looking through my upstairs bedroom window and just soaked up the view and atmosphere, magical!

Excellent capture Mark and hopefully if the clouds stay away from here (I doubt it), will at least have a look tonight.

Thanks for sharing

Managed a snap through the 120mm refractor during an unexpected lull in the clouds.
Nothing special about the photo, but as you say Mark...... once in 800 years has gotta be worth the effort!

Nice captures, Mark and Les!

I was also lucky to capture Jupiter and Saturn, on Saturday already, through thin clouds and very close to the horizon, of course. Clouded out since then and probably for the coming days, but I'm happy I could get two videos (with different exposure times for planets and moons, the image is a composite of both) and also ten minutes of observing with binoculars.

Kind regards,

Frank

Lovely shot, Mark ! We may see it today, not very likely, or tomorrow, more likely.

We still have 25cm of snow on the ground here and it does not seem to be melting anytime soon. That makes it a bit more complicated to take out a large scope, so I may try to observe with the Evostar 72mm and a 5mm TV eyepiece.

Nicely done, Mark.

Clouds here just in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Great images of the conjunction :bow

Nice to see them, as the 18th was my only clear night so far.
