Moon, February 27th, 2021

Post by LTHB »

Having seen all these pretty moon pictures here I decided I had to give it a try myself. Capturing the full moon was pretty easy, and stitching together a mosaic quickly with ImageCompositeEditor worked for the first time for me (it never did with solar mosaics). I found sharpening quite a challenge: It is really hard to avoid ringing artefacts without ending up with somewhat blurry images.

It's just black and white, however, but I have to try RGB, like Phil and Rainer when the weather allows.

Kind regards,

Frank

That's a really good one :bow :hamster: I know what you mean, sharpening the Moon is very difficult, it makes you wonder what we are doing with the Sun ;)

Frank, very good moon shot. Exposure, detail, and stitching is excellent. Just needs a little color. Maybe on the 28th?

Thanks everybody!

Taking a second look at my picture the processing could clearly be improved on several counts. Maybe I'll do a version 2.0 if I find the time in the next days.

Alexandra, exactly my sentiments about sharpening! I often wonder how much of the crisp CaK structures in my solar images may be just sharpening artifacts and how much of the soft boundaries of my h-alpha structures may be too blurry. For the moon it is easier to tell.

Hi,

Well sharpening any image is not easy and mostly makes it more difficult if the RAW material is not at its best focus point.

What is sharpening really ? IMHO it is not more then applying a bit more contrast to an image. Easy as that

Hi,

I contacted Frank in private in regard to his Moon image.

I have seen many many images in Solarchat which could easily be improved by the simple trick of taking a look at the histogram. I think I already mentioned it once but people tend to ignore this basic tool of Level Control and I guess they do because the tool is so simple that they say it can not improve my image. In this case less is much much more

Histogram stretch is about making Black Black and White White and lift the the details in the Shadows which are the Middle tones. IMHO

I did send to Frank the following analysis by taking a look at both images and think about it. OK, it is not the Holy Grail solution but brings you a big step further. IMHO
