Sugar Bush Starlight

Post by MapleRidge »

Good day everyone...

Saturday was the first day of making maple syrup for the 2021 season. I was finishing up well after dark, and admired the winter constellations showing through the trees each time I went out bring in firewood. This sight has always been one of my favourite and always admire the stars above the tree tops. I've lost track of the years, but likely had opportunity to admire these scenes for over 45 years now since I took over making syrup when my grandfather retired and moved off the farm.

The images are 25second exposures with an old Canon Rebel XT mounted on a tripod. The image below is a 2 frame mosaic covering the primary winter constellations low in the west...Orion, Canis Major, Canis Minor, Taurus, Gemini, and Auriga. Photoshop carved up the frames to make the mosaic, so it looks kinda weird, LOL.

I also took a 15 minute time exposure as well, and the colours of the stars are quite evident in the pic below. Sirius is pure white, Betelgeuse and Aldebaran are red, and Bellatrix is blue.

I was hoping to take others but the battery died after the time exposure and I had no more sap to process, so back to the house to see how they turned out ;)

Hope you enjoy these!

Brian

Terry and Alexandra...

Thanks for your comments on the pics :bow

The night sky through the bare tree limbs has always been a view I enjoyed. I think the most impressive view was back when Comet Hyakutake was visible in 1996 and its tail stretched across 2/3 of the dark, moonless sky. That was an incredible sight. Pics of that are on slides somewhere in the office.

Alexandra, always an open invitation to visit!

Very nice set of images there, Brian.

You make maple syrup commercially (as a farmer I mean)?

Rainer, Jochen, and Stuart...

Thanks for the feedback, glad you like the pics and background story :bow

I make syrup to sell, so I guess it is commercial...but very small scale in the scale of Quebec and Vermont producers  Making syrup is my only direct hand in farming now, but I do consult with farmers to help grow better crops and as a result still involved in agriculture on 30,000 acres or so. The home farm I grew up on is my brothers dairy operation and still work with him too.

As kid, I sold syrup to fund my astronomy hobby and still put proceeds to astro equipment these days.

I'm hoping to put together a set of images and videos and post them to Flickr, to show the process form start to finish.

Just need time to put it together over the next few weeks.

I'll keep you posted.
