Sea of Showers in color

Post by Astrophil »

Hi All,

After discovering the subtle colors the moon offers first hand last month, I had some clear skies to try imaging the Moon again. This time the six inch Mak was used. A Point Grey Grasshopper color and monochrome camera, both 2.8Mp, captured the images.

The delicate balancing of colors still seems subjective although certain regions are more consistent than others. There is enough variation in lunar colors to make it interesting and quite appealing without resorting to what I call a “clown moon” you know the super saturated ones. This is coming from someone who always liked sharpened grayscale lunar landscapes.

In anticipation of clear skies for this month’s full moon, a little practice was in order. Shot with and without a .5x focal reducer. The first image is a two panel mosaic taken on the 23rd followed by a closeup. The next three images are from the 25th.

Lots of fun,

Phil

These look great Phil...the colour add a new perspective on what is otherwise a rather grey landscape!!!

Really excellent, Phil. Presented as it should be.

As you know, I’m a big fan of coloured moon images.

Nicely done.

These are very good indeed, I think you have the balance just about right. I do love the coloured Moon as it brings the surface alive but not when it is excessive :hamster: :bow

I must try this sometime :)

Hi Phil, a very interesting colour-variation of the apparent grey-scale Moon that we see with the Mk1 Eyeball.
Excellent presentation and information.

Thanks for the comments. I have grown to like a more colorful moon. It does add a new perspective, as Brian said, and brings out subtle variations that may be overlooked in a grayscale image. It is kind of fun to see what happens as colors emerge and I recommend giving it a try. If not for Stu’s images, I probably would not have tried. Thanks Stu.

It looks like my practice shots were unnecessary as this months “Worm” Moon is buried in the clouds.

Phil
