March Birds

Post by MapleRidge »

Hi all...

I captured multiple photos of birds during the past few weeks, and have a few here to share.

There is still not much green in the landscape here, but there is a hint of green grass in the front lawn where I caught this Robin and Woodpecker:

While on my way to meet a customer back on March 19th, I saw several swans on the Talbot River near Kirkfield, ON:

Last is the local flock of turkeys that seem to cross the road in front of me on my way to and from work on a regular basis. We had ham for Easter today, so no turkeys were harmed

I hope everyone has a good weekend and Easter if you observe the holiday!

Nice shots, Brian.

I always forget how different Robins look at your side of the pond. Quite interesting.

I wish our thrushes were as brightly coloured as yours :hamster: and I love the Turkeys
It seems so weird to see them wild. I must confess, we had chicken today for dinner :)

Happy Easter!

Thanks for the comments everyone on the birds :bow

Jochen, I had to google the European robin to see what they look like...quite a difference for sure.

Alexandra, I have not yet had any wild turkey for a meal but I'm not against it...just need to get a licence for the season which is coming up. The majority of commercial turkeys are the large breasted white version of them and a smaller number of Bronze breasted which look much like the wild ones and do not grow nearly as large. I had the large white birds for many years and had them dressing close to 50lb at times, but no one wants them that big any more...smaller families and less desire for weeks of leftovers  The wild ones around here were basically hunted to extinction and were re-introduced 30+ years ago. They now have few natural predators and the numbers have sky rocketed to the point they cause a lot of crop damage. I don't mind seeing them in the fields, just nervous when they fly across the road at mid windshield level :o
