January 16th - Ha Images

Post by MapleRidge »

Hi everyone...

The clouds finally cleared off here late Sunday morning, which left me a short window to get out to the observatory and setup to image before the Zoom call was to start. A milder day as well, starting at about -12C...mild from my perspective  The snow storm that was promised started overnight and as of mid Monday morning we have close to a foot of snow and drifts up to my waist...will be a few hours doing cleanup with the snow blower tonight ;)

There were a number of AR's and filaments, and a few small proms as well. All the images were taken through the DS LS80T/LS75FHa/B1800Ha solar scope. The full disk images below were captured with the ASI1600MM camera and a 1.6x barlow:

The image below is what was shown on SolarMonitor.org for the activity:

The seeing was improved from the the previous session when it was much colder, so I put the 3x focal extender into the scope and switched to the ASI290MM camera for the images below. Some are mosaics where needed to cover the areas of interest and a few are single frames. There are some newton rings in these that didn't flat out.

The first covers the NW quadrant:

The next image set covers the long trail of activity from the SE limb to mid disk. The small bright region closest to the limb was the area I posted the flare notice about. It isn't very obvious in the FD image, but after changing the setup and working my way back to it about 20 mins later it was showing more activity and changes in a short period of time:

Nice ones Brian, great closeups! We ended up with about 2" so at least it is pretty out now with the cloudy skies! Just an observation, curious as to why some of the closeup shots appear to have Newton Rings (or at least a pattern) while others don't. It almost looks like northern disk shots are fine and the NR's show up in the more southern shots. The reason I ask is I notice at times using the same settings, camera, etc, sometimes I'll see rings on images and other times I won't. Should have asked this during the Zoom call!!

Brian, this is an amazing set! Looks like you had great visibility, if I didn't know the date and the temperature (-12C) you might well think it's a summer session.

Warren, Ivan, and Mark...

Thanks for your comments and feedback on the session...always appreciated :bow

Ivan, I suspect you can appreciate some of the cold temps that are in the -20's and -30s C...for many members if it gets into the low single digits it's considered cold ;)

Warren, the newton rings came about when my flat field that was captured near mid disk was used for all the images (flat applied at capture), and when I moved the scope to the limb where the brightness gradient wasn't even they show up. I should have taken new flats but it is hard to do near the limb, and I didn't bother trying to use the tilt adjuster I have as it is set for the full disk on the ASI1600MM and I didn't want to muddle it up. Lets call it being lazy

Mark. I will put some picks of the snow up in the Sunlit Earth section tonight.

A beautiful series, Brian, showing some very fine detail. The mosaics came put really well: you and I were imaging about same time Sunday morning, in very cold weather.

Alexandra and Franco...

That you for your comments on the images...always appreciated :bow

No argument from me that it was cold Franco, and you had to do all your work in the cold. I at least could slip into the warm room to do the captures ;)

Exactly :) in December we had a cold week around -29C. It is quite warm now -8C.
