January 22 2022 Observations

Post by DeepSolar64 »

My session time is from 17:18 until 19:23 UTC. I have clear skies today with fair to just below average seeing. The temperature is 39F ( 3.8C )

Coronado SolarMax II 90. SS & DS. 32x, 44.5X and 50x ( Ha )
I can see practically everything the GONG Cerro Tololo image shows today except in a red color! 5 plage regions are seen without difficulty along with a couple of other lower contrast disturbances on the Ha disc. AR12934 in the SE quadrant is easily seen with it's sizeable spot and scattered plage/disturbance. Just to it's west another plage disturbance is seen without difficulty. The SW quadrant shows a plage very near the limb. It's associated with AR12933. It's not difficult to see. A filament lies to it's SE. With difficulty I can make out a disturbance just east of AR12933. It has to be in the sweet spot to see at all.

The NW quadrant shows a not-difficult plage ( AR12932 ) with another just to it's SE. East of that plage in the NE quad lies a line of mottled somewhat lighter plage that crosses under a nice filament. I find that finding lower contrast detail visually requires correct tuning, utilizing the scope's sweet spot, double-stacking and of course experience. Seeing and the correct magnification for the feature viewed is essential too.

I picked out all the filaments shown on the GONG CT image. My favorite is a dark patchy one in the far south.

The SMII 90 is a prominence machine in singe-stack! I can see all of them shown on the GONG CT image. Detail can be seen in the prom on the SW limb. It looks much better in the " Nado ". It's overexposed on the GONG image. The NW quad shows a series of them low against the disc that looks better visually than in the GONG image. Another small bright one lies farther north of it. The NE limb shows a pair that resembles two horns! The solar devil shows again! I can also see the thin spicule layer on the limb at 50x.

The mottles are easily seen across the solar disc.

Celestron NexStar 102GT w/Altair wedge and Baader 540nm filter. 55x, 62.5x and 83x. ( WL )
I can see only three active regions on the 540nm photosphere today. AR12934 shows a single spot surrounded by faint faculae. The umbra of the spot is light bridged in it's southern portion. A small detached portion of the umbra in the eastern part of the spot shows a slightly lighter penumbral background around it. It's the only detail I could see within the penumbra itself. The SDO closeup image I attached shows this as well. I see a pore well to the NE of AR12934 and another pore well NW of it. AR12933 is seen near the limb in the far SW. It is visible as a small spot with a close look showing a penumbra. Two fairly bright patches of faculae flank it on the SE and NW. The third region is a faint patch of faculae near the NW limb. I see no spot or pore within it.

The fine solar granulation is easily seen today but the seeing is not good enough to attempt to see the individual cells.

Carpe Lumen!

James

Hi James...

Nice to see you had sun today, and thanks for posting your notes and WL images :bow

Overcast here today and light snow, but a high pressure system is to move in tomorrow and bring clear skies Sunday.

Brian

Brian,
It was nice here today and I took advantage of it. I am now at the house with two sick from coronavirus. My wife has it for the second time and she's been vaccinated three times!! My stepdaughter has it too and she's been vaccinated. So far I am fine and the kids are ok.

It is what it is I guess...

James, sorry to hear that you have family sick despite the vaccine. Best wishes for a speedy recovery for both and fingers crossed you don't come down with it!

My daughter has the Omicron version the past week, though she and her university house mates are two hours away and she needs a few more days before she should be clear. She only got her booster a short time before, but not sure if it would have helped or not. Touch wood, Sandy and I have managed to avoid it and have had the booster for about 5 weeks now. Will be nice when the spring comes, which allowed some return to normal last year.

Take care,
Brian

Brian,
I think both of them have the Omicron variant. My wife had the original strain back in the summer of 2020 and it was worse. I don't think Omicron is as severe as the older types but spreads easier.

I think this virus has no real chance of becoming endemic until everyone gets it and even then like the flu it won't just go away. Maybe in time a more predictive vaccine will be developed, more like we use for the flu.

Now hopefully the Sun won't get a virus! :-0

Thanks for the report James, I always enjoy reading them. The SM90 is a prominence monster in single stack. I've been grotty all week and have been testing for covid and it keeps coming back negative, think it's just 'man flu' I have...

Thanks for the report James. Sorry your family is sick. I wish them a speedy recovery, take care of yourself.
When my father was sick, my mother used a UV irradiator (they are "open type", but then there should be no people in the room, and "closed" - then you can stay inside) to disinfect the house. This helps a lot.

Thank you James, for the very good report. Yes, SM 90 single stack is excellent for the prominences.
