First Test with new camera Basler ACA1920-155 Refractor 230m

Post by jp-brahic »

Hello :)

in spite of a very low sun on the Horizon (25 °) and an average turbulence (5-6/10) I was able to make my first images with new Basler with IMX174 know the ACA1920-155 ( It was lent to me by Airylab)
Resolution of the camera 1920 px x 1200 px
Horizontal / vertical pixel Size 5.86 µm x 5.86 µm 155 fps

It is at present the best camera which I used!!!

Hi Jean Pierre

just wonderful pics, congratulations. Which degree of perfection is due to the new camera?

thank you everybody for your comments :)

Gordon The sensor does not make everything!!!!, the electronics of the camera is also important, and Basler makes of the very good electronics , the software for the acquisition is important too ,To exploit all the potential of the sensor

John I use a program which from a photo of the solar limb and the sampling of the camera allows to calculate the exact diameter of the sun and also the diameter of the earth in comparison

this camera makes no fringe on my set-up!!!, the noise is very very low , possesses a big dynamics!!! The big advantage that I perceive immediatly compared with my old camera it is the freezing of the turbulence , I had make the same video with my old camera to 30 fps I would never have obtained this result with a seeing of 5-6/10 !!!!!

Hi JP,

Looking at the camera specs and reading up on the IMX174 sensor it certainly does appear to be an impressive device. There's always a debate about CMOS vs CCD for astronomy work and CCD has always won out over CMOS for various reasons. In the case of this sensor it appears that Sony have solved the issue of the 'rolling shutter' traditional with CMOS devices to create a device with a fast GLOBAL shutter using on-board pixel memory. This seems to make all the difference. I think the other issue common with CMOS devices is Newton's rings; none of which appear in your images, which is a promising sign.

I was wondering if you have taken any full disk images with this camera and if you could comment on how it copes with the dynamic range of proms and disk in the same exposure. Also, are there any issues with Newton's rings with this camera at the lower focal lengths required to get the whole Sun on the sensor?

Any advice or information in relation to these questions would be appreciated.

Thanks

Stu.

Those are top notch images JP...very impressive :bow

This is another example of the IMX174's suitability for solar work (lunar and planetary are most likely served well too).

After reading this very useful post and posts on other boards on this site describing new cameras, I had a fresh look at the PGR offerings and noticed that the frame rate on their 1" 6MP
Grasshopper 3 (ICX694) has been boosted from 13 fps to 25 fps. This new upgraded version(GS3-U3-60QS6M-C, Q for Quad tap) is described as "Coming soon" with no price indicated while the 13 fps model is showing a price decrease of $300.

I'm sending an email to PGR Technical to ask whether they can upgrade the frame rate on the old 13fps model to the faster frame rate and will report back on this post.

Although I'm not in the market for a large sensor camera now, I am interested in the upcoming 2.8 MP USB 3 Chameleon(1/1.8"sensor) when it comes out in the new year.

Thanks to all for your comments :)

I have in the chance to test many cameras, in particular the Cmos and for my solar images in HR with H-alpha wavelenght, no camera until now satisfied me compared with my " Old" Basler ACA1300-30 gm with is CCD sensor !!!!

this new camera with Cmos IMX174 give me the same sensation like ICX445 but with better dynamic , bigger sensor , and much faster!!!!!
for HR the high speed allows to freeze the atmosphéric turbulence

According to certain set-up, newtons rings can appear with this camera but they disappear immediately with a little tilt of the camera , Fred Jabet could speak about it if he goes through it :)

The only negative point for this camera, it is because is needed an excellent pc to make of 155 FPS!!!! At the moment I am limited to 60 fps (SSD 500 go, USB3, Sata 2 on my Sony Vaio VPCF1)
