Flare in Motion - AR2371 - June 22, 2015
Set out to do some testing today with the new tilt adapter to try and rid the ZWO ASI120MM-S of Newton's Rings. During a full disk test, I noticed AR2371 looked really hot, so I threw on the barlow and hit record. I'm going to try and do a cleaner version as I'm not happy with the over-sharpened noisy processing, but I thought I'd gget this up for those who are interested...like most of us. :-) This is 81 minutes shot 100 frames every minute with ZWO ASI120MM-S through the Lunt LS50THa with 3x barlow. Yes, I was using the tilt adapter at full tilt, and still have a ring issue. Grrrrr. But this animation makes me happy anyway. Comments and suggestions welcome.

That's wonderful, Nick! I haven't yet seen this "blast wave" caught on an animation.
Regarding the image noise: what values of shutter and gain did you use?

GreatAttractor - Exposure was .8ms with gain on 50. If I could capture with less noise and get rid of those rings I'd be golden. I did use the deconvolution tool in ImPPG, but then did a bit of Photoshop tweaking too. Used DVS for the animating, as I had issue using the alignment feature in ImPPG, which gave me only 1 frame as result, even though it appeared to process all. Must have messed up a setting somewhere. Need to get a lot more practice in with the tools.

I think you might be pushing the focal length a bit too far. The most useful value (considering the theoretical max resolution due to diffraction) is determined by wavelength, focal ratio and pixel size. I'll compare it with my setup; we both use H-alpha and have the same pixel size (3.75 μm), so it boils down to the focal ratio.
I've observed that at f/10 the image is undersampled (when I use LS35 etalon + 350 mm singlet lens), at f/11.4 it seems just fine (that's with the stock Lunt 35 OTA), and finally at f/12.6 (my 90 mm mod) slightly oversampled (but I probably have quite a lot of spherical aberration; a perfect system could probably use an even higher f.l. to register more small details). At f/12.6 I have the histogram filled using shutter of just ~0.4 ms and zero gain.
Your Lunt 50 + 3x Barlow gives f/21 (or maybe less, depending on the actual camera distance). I'd say it's oversampled too much (the image is just stretched without revealing more detail) and it would be probably better to use a 2x Barlow. This way you still have the max resolution Lunt 50 can provide, but the image is brighter and you can lower the gain (preferably to zero) – and noise with it. I encourage you to compare 2x and 3x-barlowed processed results (perhaps there is some more detail at 3x after all).
Regarding ImPPG alignment: this could happen if all your input files had the same name (I can imagine you could have c:\seq1\capture.tif, c:\seq2\capture.tif, ...). As ImPPG always saves aligned frames to a single folder, it would keep overwriting them.

Thanks! It sounds like you are correct in your analysis of my setup. Thanks for taking the time to lay out the technical aspects. That is exactly what I've been experiencing, magnification without more detail. I will do what you suggest and try out the 2x Barlow to allow less noisy settings. And maybe Newtons Rings will be less with the 2x. That thought excites me.
