100mm PST Mod - Day 2...

Post by marktownley »

Following on from yesterday I decided to be up, out and setup first thing this morning to capitalise on any blue sky that may be about before the 'april showers' kicked in; i'm glad I was ready as they ultimately started about 3 hours earlier than yesterdays. I decided to take a flat field today, and this has shown a big improvement on yesterdays image.

One thing that I am finding completely different is the post processing with single stack compared to double stack; I had tried my usual routine and found this to be completely unsuitable, however, spending sometime last night with a bottle of red and CS4 and my creative approach was soon reawakened, I think I have the basis of a single stack routine, that, give me a lil' time to refine and will get up as a tutorial...

It's a real dilemma with the poor weather we're having this april here in the UK, I wanted to (and did for a while) just look through the eyepeice, mouth open, ooo-ing and ahh-ing to myself at the 100mm views, however i'm concious while i'm doing this clouds are fast bubbling up and encroaching, and today was no excepption so I sacrficed visual views to get some imaging instead...

I was straight to the the huge prom that has graced us for the last couple of days around ARs 11462 & 11463 and it didn't fail to impress:

Moments after capturing it I noticed the histogram on IC Capture was being pinched in from either side and I could see the first signs of haze drifting across the image on the laptop screen - despite the sky being clear from a naked eye point of view. I decided to carry on regardless, and while the following images are lacking in a bit of contrast I think they're still worth seeing...

These were all taken with 100mm PST mod @ f10, DMK31, stacked in avistack2 post processing in CS4.

I really am looking forward to using this setup under properly clear skies and with time on my hands so everything isn't a rush...

Hope you like these, there's more to come from this afternoon of the liftoff of the huge prom, just processing now.

Mark :)

Fantastic Mark  you must be so excited. We have had rain all day apart from just a glimpse now.

I think I've missed a lot of news, not seen or heard about the mod yet. I think I need to do some reading of previous posts.

Thanks Walter, thanks Alexandra :)

Alexandra, you do know you have all the bits already to be able to double stack your SF100, and retain use of your PST whenever you want to ;)

Mark, youve hit the nail on the head with these, nice proms and full disk together.

>spending sometime last night with a bottle of red and CS4...

Aha! Now I know what is missing from my processing routine! ;)

Thanks Cai Uso, when I have proper clear skies and not just gaps in between showers the barlow will definitely be used, i'm looking forward to it ;)

Yes Alexandra, other than a few tens of pounds worth of adapters you have all you need, the hardest bit will probably be unscrewing the etalon from your PST...

Thanks Chris, a bottle of red is often all that is needed to instigate a different approach :)

Thank you very much everyone! I do appreciate your kind words :)

Robert, good to see you back here, hope you are well! I was going to do a write up this weekend about the scope with pics, then the sun came out (briefly!) and I was distracted and started imaging. If the weather forecast holds true i'll do a peice about it in the week when i'm rained in again.

I'd recommend not using a TEC as a donor scope though - my own confidence in chopping things up is inversely proportional to the price of the thing I'm chopping up. A solarscope/PST would be an interesting entity though.

The TEC has lots of infocus (is that the right term?) if memory serves, not suggesting Alexandra does any chopping at all of it - one would definitely not chop one up! I reckon you would just get away with, faing that it has a 3.5" focuser so the etalon could be mounted 'inboard'

mark,
An "in-board" etalon still need access panel (?) to allow adjustment - See Roel's example....

Hi Mark...

Those are amazing images out of your modded scope. Processing is nicely done as well.
