Only Stardust In The Wind - Farewell My Friend...
Re: Only Stardust In The Wind - Farewell My Friend...
This news came as a huge shock to me, our thoughts are with his family and all those that knew Walter.
I never had the privilege of meeting him in person but his enthusiasm, knowledge and generosity for solar astronomy was exceptional and inspirational.
Thank you Walter!

Re: Only Stardust In The Wind - Farewell My Friend...
As a bit of an update for people; I was speaking with Walters sister yesterday. She told me that following his death on monday the family went to see him one final time on tuesday in the hospital, where, even though he was dead was lay there smiling. He was cremated on thursday and on friday his wife returned with the ashes to the family home.
There will be a farewell ceremony on saturday 22nd august at Walters favourite place, Sewenseeli where his ashes will be cast. I've included a couple of images of this tranquil place.
Myself and Fiona were due to fly to Switzerland on the 22nd to visit Walter anyway, we had arranged all this months ago, however we have rescheduled our outbound flight so we arrive on the 21st instead so that we can attend the farewell ceremony. Walter had wanted his family friends to gather after the ceremony for a meal. I know it will be an emotional day but it will be one that I would not want to miss. We have already met some of Walters family and friends look forward to meeting more and sharing happy stories of Walter.
I have made sure the family are aware of everyones heart felt messages and will continue to do so.

I have a few posts, in which Walter always attended, and seems to have a long-time friend, this is the power of simple man
Mark, it will be nice if you can "in respect of the local culture" take some pictures of the ceremony for us, would help our emotion to feel more close to Walter.

It just came to my mind: Once, I believe it was still on CN forum, I commented on a joke he made (actually a very good one) and he told me something like "I'm a rarity: A swiss with a sense of humour!". He sure was a rarity!

From Joe Sullivan:
I was unable to post in time due to access issues. I see Stephen has allowed the posts to end. Perhaps rightfully so but I have had this sitting on my desktop. I needed to share this. Please share/place it as appropriate:
Many apologies to all for my long hiatus,
More than a tear here too was shed when I read this sad news. Walter was one of those people that one found themselves hoping that they would be able meet. One of those guys you wanted to share a cold one with. Nothing was sacred, Walter would tear into a new Cak filter so fast it was stunning, just to see how it worked (A man after my own heartJ). As stated in other posts, Walter truly was the heart of the forum with his kind words, help, and enthusiasm for this community. His myriad of posts demonstrated that. Many of us felt like we knew him. It was as if he invited into his home with the pictures of his home, lovely wife, jokes he would post like his wife’s, (She must have been shopping, hope she didn’t see that. J) sewing machine strapped on an equatorial mount (J So LOL) and his continually ongoing optical experiments and detailed microscopic posts (literally). All in a genuine effort to help, educate, and entertain. Walter was one of the few on my Facebook contacts page. I still have experiments sitting on my hutch that I hoped to enthusiastically share with him one day soon. Walter has been inspiration to many of us. I know he was to me. This forum truly did lose a loved, valuable friend and contributor. Regardless, Walter will indeed be missed. I think I speak for many of us when I say, CHEERS! We will see you on the other side Walter!

I will miss my dear swiss friend, his kindness, his generosity in helping all of us, his inclination to participate and share his experience
My sincere condolences to his family and his friends
Walter used to repeat this phrase, but we'll have less "fun in the sun" without you, Walter

Hi Mark...
I've missed this original post while work left me limited time to follow everything closely...but very sad to hear of Walter's passing. Thanks for the updates and the pics of his chosen resting place.
I believe it was Walter that invited me to join this group, for that I am grateful. I miss all of his posts and comments...RIP Walter.

Re: Only Stardust In The Wind - Farewell My Friend...
I still feel sad when I think about it now.
Here is an album of pictures from the ceremony a relative of his took. As you might see, Walter wanted flowers from his garden to be cast with his ashes and for everyone to enjoy his favourite wine - very Walter!
https://www.flickr.com/gp/brierleyhillsolar/f06U85
We spent a lot of time talking with his family and friends, everybody recounting happy tales. One that really made smile was with a group of friends he went to university with, and there was an 'experiment' that the lecturers said was impossible to do, however Walter argued with his lecturers that by 'modifying' the experiment it would work and proceeded to do it anyway; well apparently it did work but a side effect was a large explosion that filled the lab with soot and smoke causing an evacuation. The lecturers were not happy with him, but Walter continued to argue that they had not stipulated that he was not allowed to do it with an explosion. Throughout his university career he became infamous among his peers and lecturers for doing experiments that other people would not do... Sounds familiar eh?
His friends and family knew that he liked his 'stars', but were amazed at how many people knew him in these 'circles' and also how respected he was. It was nice to be able, and very much appreciated by his friends and family, for me to share pictures of Walter on Facebook and also this forum that they were not aware existed.

Re: Only Stardust In The Wind - Farewell My Friend...
Oh my gosh! I was wondering why there weren't any recent posts from Walter -- greatly missed, and condolances to his family.Walters last message really touched me; he told me he was going to go to his favourite star and look back at us all and smile.
Rest in Peace and shine on forever Walter...
A New Star
I see a bright new star tonight
As I gaze up into the sky,
It glistens in a teardrop
As it drifts upon a sigh.
A little light all filled with soul
A twinkle so unlike the rest,
To me it’s brighter than the moon
More than any other, it’s the best.
A part of earth for just a while
Now the heavens are its home,
Here it was confined as life
There it’s free to roam.
A little gem to crown the sky
A jewel for all to see,
Its sparkle is for all mankind
Its memory, just for me.

Re: Only Stardust In The Wind - Farewell My Friend...
Sorry I missed the original post during the end of term rush, followed by a vacation and beginning of term rush.
Very sad news indeed. I never met him in person but through his many discussions, comments, and encouragements on SolarChat and his answers to many of my questions I got a great appreciation of his open, generous, and enthusiastic personality. Very sad to hear he is no longer with us. Condolences to his family and friends everywhere in the world.

I'm shocked to hear this sad news just now, I have had no internet for a while due to a move. RIP Walter and my condolences to family and friends.

Re: Only Stardust In The Wind - Farewell My Friend...
Afternoon all, I have managed to find a good home for the coin Walter gave me the last time we met (as you may know we had a bet on the Spot count and Walter gave me a 1 Swiss franc coin to pay his dues......)
Well it has been on my shelf since then and a reminder of one of the nicest people I have ever had the pleasure of meeting....
Anyway, last week there was the auction of the remaining items of Sir Patrick Moore's estate that could not be used for the permanent displays and of no scientific value. It was a 2 day auction and I attended via the live link on the webby thing so could take part........
Most of the lots went for a lot more than my budget would allow, but managed to win the last box of memorabilia that was up for bids....
It was a box of random items really, which seems more personal items as Sir Patrick would have spotted them, bought them and used them, one of the items was his coin purse..........
A fitting resting place for Walter's coin, and can just imagine Walter looking down and having a chuckle.......
