June 25th Session

Post by MapleRidge »

Hi everyone...

Well, it took a week but I managed to sneak a few hours in to process the video clips taken last Sunday and get them posted.

This session continued the display of the large filaprom that was visible the previous day, but it had become more regular prominence in the 24hrs that elapsed from the previous session. Still, it was a great prom to view and image and AR 2264 was still a great target.

The first images are full disk and limb composites taken with the LS80T/DSII/B1200Ha solar scope and PGR camera (ICX674 chip):

The final FD image had the gamma boosted to pull in the proms without the disk/limb stack:

The seeing continued to be poor, so I stuck to imaging with the LS80T scope, but added the 2.5x barlow to get a higher resolution image of the filament/prom activity on the western limb:

Before finishing up before lunch I shot a few images through the Meade 25cm ACF/Daystar full aperture ERF/AiryLab 2.7x telecentric and the ZWO174MM camera in binned mode to try the AR and proms with the Daystar Quantum 0.45A filter. Results were far from ideal...seeing on the SSM was running in the 3-4 range, occasionally dropping below 2. I've posted them to show what the day produced...probably the seeing had the most effect, though I have had little time to experiment on refined stacking and processing for these images:

Comments, thoughts, and suggestions are more than welcome ;)

That's all form the last session. I'm hoping for some clear skies over our long holiday weekend, and more rain has work on hold for a few days too...maybe a chance to play in the sun again :P

Hi Brian

Good to see you posting again. I'm having the same issues as you with my large ERfs, finding seeing good enough to support a large aperture.
Your hi res prom looks like it has some good detail in it but I'm guessing a high gain value had to be used. The LS80 images are, as usual, great quality.

I want to use about 4600mm on my c9.25 as a base but with a Quark or PST in SS mode, the proms are very faint and all images I've posted so far don't exceed what I've produced with my 152 Lunt. I guess a few people have lucked out finding good Quarks or PST for their large scopes. Your hi res prom looks like it has some good detail in it but I'm guessing a high gain value had to be used. Stacking a Quark on a PST does give more contrast, but the view is very dim and tuning on the PST is very coarse. I'm expecting my SSM on Tuesday next and I hope that helps in lessening the frustration.

Hi Lou...

Hope you are getting some sun this long weekend...hints of it here but not looking good at the moment.

Seeing is the biggest challenge, and the slow, cold spring has not provided any ground cover on the neighboring fields so my local seeing is worse than usual.

The prom and AR in live view certainly looked better than what was processed...probably a multitude of issues between seeing, soft focus, and stack/processing that needs refinement with this long focal length setup.

Good luck with your system!!!

Brian

Some wonderful images here, Brian, particularly the close up views on the Lunt 80 of that large hedgerow prom.

Large ERF scopes really do require excellent seeing.

Lovely set Brian. That prom certainly was a great target.

I really enjoyed these Brian, I love the full disc and the close up prominence has wonderful fine detail, quite superb. I hope you have had a sunny holiday weekend :bow :hamster:

Nice results Brian! The seeing is so important at these large apertures. I don't bother with the HaT unless it is registering as 2 and below.

Lovely shots Brian. I am glad you are getting some imagining done. The weather has been horrendous from my site, a couple of hundred miles to your north.
