Flat black

For anyone looking for a flat black paint, you might want to take a look at this one:

https://culturehustle.com/products/blac ... t-material

Not as good as Vanta black, but given that no one can purchase Vanta black (a novel nano carbon black material) it comes in as a respectable second. I used this when I refurbished my 150/Lunt 35 mod. Nothing beats having correctly positioned light baffles to prevent stray light, but augmenting this with a good flat black can only help.

I primed and painted using my usual grey primer and matte black top coat and then finished off with a couple of brushed coats of this product.

Hi Stu,

Looked the Black 2.0 up here in the States on Amazon, however, it gets quite a few mediocre reviews:

https://www.amazon.com/BLACK-2-0-mattes ... B0758GKKGZ

The Berger Astrogerate Bart suggested is a bit more expensive. It's available from Telescope Express in Germany in 250 and 750 ml, but shipping to the States is expensive (33 Euros):

https://www.teleskop-express.de/shop/pr ... 50-ml.html

Also available from Astrolumina:

A lot of folks in the US seem to like Krylon Ultra Falt Black:

Looks like a heads-up comparison test between the three would be desirable...

Thanks for the suggestions, Bob. I do have access to a reflectometer at work, so maybe this is I project to be undertaken at some point. I did find Black 2 to be pretty good with normally incident light and less good at oblique angles, so my thoughts here were more about reducing those stray reflections that bounce around that we can sometimes see. Light baffles will always be the most effective way of eliminating oblique angle reflections, of course......no light, no reflections. ;)

Hi Stu,
Let me know if you start this project. I could send you a sample of the German Berger paint. Bart.

Here's a link to the Krylon Ultra Flat Black on USA Amazon - don't know about European sources:

Not too expensive...

I have received word that the Berger Astrogate anti-reflection paint cannot be shipped to the USA from either of the two sources above :-(

Hi Bart,

Thank you very much for your offer.

Apparently the paint contains materials deemed hazardous for international shipping: "Attention !!! Can not be shipped by air due to security restrictions!"
