October 30th in Ha

Post by MapleRidge »

Hi everyone...

Clear skies have been scarce around here the past month with few days offering more than a few hours of clear sky. This past Tuesday was an exception being clear from dawn to dusk, and work was quiet enough I managed to get some time to view and image over my lunch. As others have reported form their observations on the same day there was little disk activity but many smaller proms and filaments made for good targets.

Seeing was poor and I didn't have high expectations for high resolution work, but I tried all the Ha systems I could...LS75FHa on the William Optics 72mm OTA for full disks, the Daystar Quantum on the C9.25 Edge, and the modded CR-150 OTA fitted with both the Lunt LS80T primary etalon and the DSII module to make a double stack on this this scope. I found the full disk and modded scopes gave the best results.

First, the full disk Ha through the WO 72mm fitted with the LS75FHa front mount etalon and a B1200Ha imaged with the PGR Grasshopper Express (ICX674 chip). The limb is inverted to enhance the proms:

The second has a longer exposure to pull out a little more of the fainter proms and the disk is masked out:

The remaining images were taken with the modded CR-150 in DS mode and a B1800Ha blocker and 3x tele-extender ahead of the camera (ZWO174MM). The first images will highlight the filaments with a trio of them near mid disk and a couple of other small tufts visible against the disk:

This pretty much covers the session. Sunday is supposed to be clear so I hope that is true and the seeing improves as well :?

Questions and comments are always welcome,
Brian

Certainly the proms are the most exciting part of the full disc :) and the close ups are exceptional. Low activity certainly makes hi res a must have :bow

Not much chance of Imaging here in Leicester UK, although the sky has been clearish, just like today ( Friday 2 nd Nov) it is quite milky. So the best I can manage when I get the chance is similar to the 5th and 6th pics, can you get much detail from those? Anyway a great set, as always, thanks for posting.

Hi, Brian

That's a nice line up of features from Oct 30. I hope that the weather clears by Sunday as you say and that there are large features to view.
I'd like one more go before the season levels off.

Thank you for the views, Brian. The prominences look really nice. I have not been able to image for the entire month of October...

Thanks Mark!!!

October has been more cloudy/wet than usual this year, and astronomical pursuits have been limited. Clear skies are still forecast for Sunday, so fingers are crossed fro a sunny day!
