Thanks Mark

I will have to buy a better tilt adjuster. I already ordered the DayStar Interference Eliminator T2

Very nice Pedro.

The DayStar Interference Eliminator T2 is the best tilter that I
have used.

Thanks Maurits

I have another tilt adjuster but the daystar seems much better- You really need to use one of these with the CMOS cameras in H-alpha

Pedro,
With your Quark and Tec140 do you see both Limb proms and surface in live preview or only after post processing? I can only get one or the other.

Nice images Pedro! Have you got an ADC? You could try that instead of a tilt adapter.

Thanks again guys

Jack: I can see both, surface details and proms with high gamma settings. I use curves in Photoshop to produce the false colour image. Check out the following PDFs:

Bart: Thanks for the tip. I already ordered the tilt adapter but I will keep in mind that the ADC also works

But you're stretching the view Jack or using gamma?

Mark,
I use Sharpcap so whether I stretch the preview with the histogram or leave it full spread or move the midpoint I just can't seem to see both. Seeing the proms blows out the disk and seeing the disk loses the proms.

I'm sure it is user error.

I can use Firecapture but I have not learned how to stretch the histogram yet in that program.

Don't move anything Jack! Capture full spread and don't move the mid point. You can do tweaking in post process.

Mark, that is where I feel like I am missing something. In Sharpacap I can stretch the histogram only for the live preview. Even when I do that the actual video captured is unstretched.

I use Sharpcap because i get a more pleasing preview since my work is frequently live outreach. If I can get Firecapture to do that I could try that tool.

Am I missing something?

You can follow Mark's suggestion or you can use Firecapture. With Sharpcap you cannot change gamma. If you use Firecapture you can image using different gamma settings. I always use (H-alpha imaging) a low value (512/600) for surface details and a high value (1200) for proms

Hope this helps

This is my third Quark (chromosphere). You have to get one that works first. When you do it's great for HR H-alpha imaging

Hi Pedro,

I greatly admire your images.

Some people say you don't need a high quality APO for solar H-alpha imaging because H-a is monochrome.

Even the camera is usually monochrome. So there is no chromatic aberration to spoil the image.

Would you agree?

Thanks

thanks

I agree that you should use the best telescope possible to image the sun

The TEC140 is great and I get better results compared to other telescopes I use in my solar imaging sessions

For H-alpha imaging (narrowband) you can use an ED or even an achromatic OTA. For Calcium & Continuum it is best to use a good apo refractor

It's spherical aberration that 'softens' the monochrome wavelengths we image in solar...

So the advantage of the higher quality of the APO lies mostly in its improved, spherical figure and more careful polish?
Rather than its ability to bring more colours to the same focus.Which may not even include H-alpha in their prescription.
It follows that a single, aspherical lens could replace these costly APO objectives in larger sizes.
Rather like the early coronagraphs. Or, as we now see, an increase in the use of reflecting optical systems.

Thanks.

It's not as straight forward as you think, a fraunhofer achro can often have better SA correction than a triplet, certainly so at shorter wavelengths. However, a triplet will have much higher Strehl at 540nm than an achro.

Not all scopes are created equal either; a £8k TEC140 is going to be optically worlds apart (better) than (for example) a 5" Explore Scientific APO - they're both triplets but quite different beasts.

I agree with Mark, not all scopes are created equal. You will have to test each OTA. I know that Takahashi apos perform really well in at shorter wavelengths
