Huge Prom Today, Convection Cells | Sept 19th 2019

Post by MalVeauX »

Heya,

I was all clouded out this morning so went on with the day. Around noon (Eastern) it cleared up and I got a chance to look at that huge prom on the limb that is changing quite rapidly. Just in the few minutes I was imaging it, it went from a hedgerow to something else as it changed its morphology. Was hoping it would just lift right off, but didn't happen in my time, its still persisting and clinging to the chromosphere, but I expect it will release soon. Hope someone catches it.

All of these are stunning but the convection cell ( Granulation ) photo is the one that impresses me most. Granules are small. I have read they are between Texas and Alaska in size. How big does that translate in arcseconds as seen on the sky? I would guess no bigger than two arcsec at best. I can detect them easily in my 70mm refractor. But not like this!!

Lovely images, Marty. The Earth scale really puts it into perspective.

A typical granule is around 1,000km +/-. In the above case, it was captured at 0.3"/pixel and the pixels are 5.86um. :)

All good, Marty. Your systems are working well. The second image is most appealing.
