Black 3.0

Post by bart1805 »

It seems that the paint I used for the inside of my telescopes, Berger Antireflexfarbe, can't be ordered anymore:
http://www.astrogeraete.de/Antireflexfarbe.html

TS offers now its own paint:
https://www.teleskop-express.de/shop/pr ... 50-ml.html

But like the Antireflexfarbe "Can´t be shipped by air freight due to safety restrictions". For me in the Netherlands that is not a real problem. But for others it is. Maybe this is a good candidate, as it seems possible to ship all over the world:

I ordered a bottle of Black 3.0 and will let you know if it is any good.

CS! Bart.

Hi Bart,

I’ve tried Black 3. It is certainly ‘blacker’ than the original Stuart Semple black, but like a lot of these blacks, at acute illumination angles there is some reflection. At most angles to the black surface though, the paint appears nice and dark. It’s a water based acrylic paint, so is safe to use and transport.

The most effective way to prevent stray light down the OTA is with baffles, of course, but painting these and the walls with Black 3.0 should also help reduce those awkward reflections.

Hi Stu, thanks! I am curious if I can notice any difference between this paint and the Astroberger. Totally agree that baffles are the best way. CS! Bart.

Hi Bart,

I’ll be very interested to hear your assessment of black 3. :)

Hi Stu,
It is for sure more black than the Berger Antireflexfarb. When you see them next to each other, the Berger paint is more super dark grey. And yes, I agree with what you say: at acute angles there is still some reflection.
