Today's Large Prominences | Oct 15th 2019

Post by MalVeauX »

Heya,

It was cloudy and not nice outside this morning so I missed the window to use finer scales, but later in the afternoon the sky cleared up, but I was greeted with lousy seeing. Still, 120mm aperture at 656nm tends to work out even when my seeing is poor. So I managed to get some data on two very interesting prominences. One is a hedgerow morphology and the other is very faint and long and seems kind of like a detached fan morphology perhaps? There's a few dark little filaments that were the gorgeous prominences from before that have rounded the limb. Earth scales provided for reference.

Dear Marty,

Magnificent work, really detailed and flat looking solar images!
I love your animation of the proms, superb!
I saw your YouTube video - thanks. I have had to take notes and view your video several times.

Do you still use your ASI174mm camera, it had this strange effect on the image at certain gains.

How do you include the images in your post? I don't have a paid astrobin account. Do you use Flickr or another posting site.

Thanks!
Magnus

Hi Magnus, I still use the ASI174MM (IMX174 sensor) camera. My IMX174 sensor has an error in it that when I saturate exposure, there are lines. But I rarely over-expose with it on solar these days and mostly use it for full disc due to the larger sensor size.

I recently started using an ASI290MM (2.9um) camera because of the small pixels and its fast FPS along with being pretty sensitive (more sensitive in real world application than the IMX178 sensor with similar 2.4um pixels). But this is also because I started using F10 systems and it matches 656nm with the pixel size.

I host images on Flickr for forum posting. You can also of course just attach pictures directly (under the post field there's a tab for attachments and you an upload quite a lot).

Very best,

Hi Marty,

Very beautiful set of images. You have it all, Proms, filament, zoom-in on the chromosphere, like them all.

Ok, thank you. I did not know F10 systems were possible.
I will keep on practising.

Clear skies and sunshine to you as well, Brian. Great youtube video you have posted on your solar imaging!! Thanks very much.
