New Plage, Proms & Cells | Oct 29th 2019

Post by MalVeauX »

Heya,

Woke up to an ok sky, clouds, but had a chance. Got some data later in the afternoon, so seeing was poor, but managed. The new plage is interesting and there are some proms in the quadrants on the limbs. Took at look at the plage in two scales and both from the chromosphere & photosphere perspective.

A great set of images, Marty. Nice to see a little activity stirring up, there. Looks good in WL too.

Nicely done, Marty. Excellent close up of the active region.

Super images but in the WL I don't think I can see any pores so that is a bit disappointing but then again I don't think we can hope for much these days out of cycle 24 :) Still a beautiful swirl in Halpha though :hamster:

Marty, is the first image in WL done with a wedge or with film filter?

Excellent images Marty :bow

That bit of activity looked promising, but has never grown into anything that NOAA assigned a number to!

I don't use film nor wedges for imaging, they lower transmission too much.

That first image was done with my C8 Edge and my full aperture Aires D-ERF followed by a Baader Red CCD-IR blocked filter (2nd erf). The transmission is so high that I have to then use a Baader 10 stop ND filter. I sometimes then use a Baader 610nm filter after that, but it's not needed. Transmission is still so high that this only gives me a little room to work with since the shortest exposure is 0.032ms and this one was at 0.281ms with no gain.

When I do it with my refractor, I only use a Baader Red CCD-IR block filter as the primary ERF deep in the light cone, or the Blue version of the same filter if I'm doing 393nm or 430nm. And then follow it with a narrowband filter with an appropriate UV/IR block filter to complete the blocking but maintain high transmission. And I often have to use a 10 stop ND filter here too to lower transmission enough to not saturate at the shortest exposure.

Very best,
