Lunt LS60 DS – Testing a new toy

Post by Ronnie_Clayton »

Hello friends!
Last week I did the first test with my new toy, a Lunt LS60 DS. I´ve liked it, but I´m having some challenges with “ghost discs” (more than I was expecting). Other issue occurs at right side of sun image (in the picture), there are some “rings” (like reflections) that I can´t eliminate (yet). It´s interesting because they appear just at the right side of image, I´ve tried rotate the camera, tilt the camera, adjust the etalons tuning but didn’t solved it…
This full disc images I did using a DMK51 camera

So, here are the equipment and the Sun pictures, I hope you enjoy :) !

I think they're great image's. I to have a lunt 60mm pressure tuned DS. I've always first tuned the 60mm without the double stack then add the DS and tuned that. That's what lunt recommends. Not sure what else to suggest.

Ronnie,

Your images look good to me, can't see the rings you speak of on my monitor. The photo of your setup is indoors, do you shoot through a window?

Thanks guys!

Dan, I catch my pictures from my balcony (I live in an apartment). I keep the windows opened to do the job ;-)...

About the rings, I´m talking about it...

Yeah Ronnie I see them now. Don't know what would cause that, sorry. I still think your images are impressive.

While I have nothing useful to say about the "ghost rings"; I do love the images. Nicely done!

Hi Ronnie! Nice shots and nice new toy. They almost look like a processing artefact to me rather than something to do with the scope.

Thanks Friends!

@Marktownley
At the first time I was thinking that it was some processing artefact too... But it appears during the capture, just on the right side of image/video. Yesterday I did some videos (I need to process to share here) and these rings appeared again...

How have you got the edge of the sun brighter than it would appear normally? Also, are you running with gamma turned on with the camera?

Marktownley,
For the edge I use the Curves Tool. In the first image I´ve used the "curve toll" in a single layer (same curve for both edge and surface). For second image I´ve used the "curve tool" in two different layers (one for edge and other for surface).
About Gamma, normally I use Gamma enabled in my captures.

Ronnie,

You need a new b/w camera and you should use 16bit image data to get rid of these "rings".

Hi Dan,

I used to shoot the Sun through a window. I have not seen a difference between shooting through a window or without window.

This was my setup when I started with H-alpha imaging and had no Observatory. This was January 2008

Hi,

How do you colour your images ? because it looks similar to what I do applying in real time a colur mask and no need for two exposures (Surface and Prominences)

These images look fantastic Ronnie :hamster: you live at a dizzying height

When I first saw what you meant by the rings I thought instantly what Mark said. I get this same effect with the Solarscope and the Grasshopper 3 when the gamma is too high. I found a limit that I should never go over on the gamma to keep these down to a minimum and yes, I found it worse on one side than the other. Drop the gamma down or use a different camera but still don't increase the gamma too much.

Hello,

No secrets here :-). Basically I use Color Curve Tool for each color channel (RGB). I don´t use two exposures...

Hi Ronnie,

So do you do this while straming the AVI or afterwards during processing ? I am asking because my existing software Lucam Recorder does only work with Lumenera = SkyNyx cameras or the Imaging source and I intend to go for ZWO in the future.

Thanks Rainer

Hello Rainer

For my images I use the following sequence:
01 - For Capturing: Genika Astro (in mono, SER format)
02 - For Stacking: Autostarkket (TIFF output file format in mono)
03 - For Editing (Deconvolution, contrast, etc (in mono)): AstraImage
04 - For Editing (false color, fine tuning, etc): Affinity Photo.
So, I apply the false color just in the final of editing process.
