Prominences & Filaments | HA & CaK | Feb 9th 2020

Heya,

Another clear day, but the seeing was poor for my area typically. Regardless it supported the image scale (0.5"/pixel) in both wavelengths with lucky imaging. Took a look at today's prominences, some faint ones, and some nice dark filaments. No real noteworthy surface features today otherwise. Earth scales provided for the prominences. Most of them are on the Eastern limb quadrants. Both chromospheres represented, the lower & upper via Ha & CaK.

Hi Marty,

Good Close-Up images. Not much activity :(

Nice work again.

Small question if you don't mind. Where exactly did you place the Blue CCD filter? The Lunt CaK module doesn't have any the possibility (at least mine doesn't) to thread it on.

I put a 35mm 2" extension in front of it, with the filter threaded on there. Inserted the Lunt filter into that.

I'm thinking of disassembling the Lunt filter though. I consider it imaging only, so I don't need any of its protection filters, whatever is in there, or at least the visually protective filters. Just enough to protect the filter itself but otherwise, I'd love to get rid of anything not needed, to help increase transmission. It's ok as it is, but it's a wonky filter to use since it's so large and so long with it's 2" barrel and whatever is in it.

Very best,

Very best,
That makes sense, thanks (couldn't make it out on the picture).

I was also quite surprised at the size of the Lunt CaK module when it arrived (or well, the 2" tube part that goes into the focuser at least). However, I'm not sure what purpose the silver filter (I'm sure you know what I'm referring to) on the front of the tube serves exactly. If it's just an ERF, then it shouldn't be an issue to remove it and replace it with whatever you want to use for that purpose. But if it's coated in some way to serve other purposes, then it might be tricky.

I don't know for sure what all the glass is in the filter (Lunt CaK), but I'm pretty sure most of it is ERF and ITF for energy handling and visual safety. The CaK filter itself is just a single filter at 2.4A. But I don't know enough about whats in it. I do want to remove anything not needed though. I'm sure some of it is purposefully there for visual safety but not needed for imaging purposes. I consider it an imaging only filter for me and will never look through it.

Very best,
