Early morning solar viewing 5-6th May 2020
I managed 2 very quick sessions early mornings before starting work. Tuesday was clear blue sky but the seeing appalling and the wind terrible, so I had packed away before 9am.
Wednesday was much better but even early morning I could see a saw tooth edge to the solar disc when visually looking at the Sun through the Solarscope. This spring really is the worst seeing conditions I have ever had consistently for more than 10 years solar viewing. Is it because I now have new houses on my viewing sky this year? It is starting to alarm me, especially after forking out so much on the C11 stuff. Anyway, it was just about bearable to support a 1.6x Barlow on the Solarscope DSF100 and the prominences were the stars.

followed by a relaxing visual session sketching the prominence. The little hook in the centre erupted and changed rapidly during the 15min sketch so I had to keep changing the drawing.

Then a full disc which is best viewed if you click through Flickr and keep clicking on the image until it is fully magnified.
This first one I over did the shadows and highlights to try and bring out the prominences

the second is general colour

oh yes and Tuesday, I just about managed to scrape a CaK full disc image at 1x with the ASI174

and tried to test the 3x Barlow Televue with the cheapo Revelation 3x Barlow. It was a bit of a joke really, I managed this one below with the Televue but all the others were rubbish. I would say they are both pretty much identical. Probably the Televue has a slight edge in contrast and clarity and would be my one to pick but if you are on a budget the Revelation one is really all you need. I still think the Televue 2.5x powermate pops them all for clarity and contrast - if it didn't have that irritating reflection in the centre to spoil everything.

A very good session even with bad seeing, Alexandra. Your FDs are very clean and detailed, the prom shots cams out great and your drawing is excellent. Sorry to hear about the houses nearby. Glad you are enjoying some time with the sun.

Re: Early morning solar viewing 5-6th May 2020
You got a nice set of images Alexandra despite the seeing. The new houses may well be affecting the seeing, any development large or small will have a thermal signature, urban heat island and all that. It's probably exactly the same reason why I can't get hi-res images very often at all.
Very interesting about the barlows, I was secretly hoping the el-cheapo would trump the TV, but is still good to hear there is not much between them. You have got me thinking about the powermate and what makes it have more contrast than the others, I wonder if it is because it is a telecentric, and the narrow pass filter should operate closer to it's specified parameters in a telecentric beam rather than a converging beam. Hmm, time for me to do an experiment.

Re: Early morning solar viewing 5-6th May 2020
Thanks guys for all the warm wishes
The sketch was with pencil (spelling mistakes and all)
Jozef, that is a brilliant series of images, is the time stamp UTC or local time? also, could I take a copy to submit to the British Astronomical Association archives with my sketch and images as it follows on so nicely?

Awesome work Alexandra. Isn't it really nice to see change in the eyepiece in so short of time? Very few if any other astronomical object can boast that like the Sun can!
