August 4: H alpha series

Post by p_zetner »

Hi Everyone.

A few days of beautiful weather with relatively good seeing. I was able to do an extensive spectroheliograph run on the 3rd and here are the results of some H-alpha imaging on the 4th. The equipment: Aries ERF, Celestron C8 Edge, Moonlite CHL focuser, Daystar QPE 0.6A, Point Grey USB3 Grasshopper IMX174. Homemade optics give ~ f/46 telecentric at the Daystar filter and optional focal reduction to ~ f/30 when required.

Hope you enjoy!
Peter.

Excellent high resolution images, Peter!

Nice to see the sun with higher activity.

Any chance you will image the sun at Ca II I 8542,1A with your spectroheliograph?

Great images, Peter, H-alpha is really 3D... Any detail about your telecentric ?

Thanks for the kind comments, everyone!

Alexandra: I was pretty pleased with the "fluffiness" and the detail in the prom. Seeing makes all the difference.

Valery: I've just posted a full disk image, in the Solar Radio, Magnetometry and Spectroscopy section, taken in one of the CaII triplet lines (8498 A). I think I know what you're looking for. Some of the professionals observe a CaII triplet chromosphere which looks like a hybrid of H alpha and Ca K. This is probably only detectable at high image resolutions.

Raf: I've attached a photo and schematic of the telecentric. It's a train of four achromatic doublets: -80mmfl, -120mmfl, -120mmfl and +120mmfl. Let me know if you'd like more detail. The optics train in the photo is longer than necessary. There is an extra extension tube between the Daystar filter and the 2" eyepiece holder. I normally don't use this and should take a new photo! The focal reducer is simply a 300mmfl achromatic doublet held in the tube (to which the camera is attached) which slides into the eyepiece holder.

Cheers.
Peter

Excellent images, Peter. Lots of lovely fine details resolved in those close views.

That’s an impressive setup. :)
