October 17. 2020 Observations

Post by DeepSolar64 »

I encoured " session interruptus " and had to observe at two different times about an hour apart. The first was from about 11:00am until noon and the second from about 1:15pm to 3:30pm EDT local time US. At 2:00pm it is 57F. Skies are a crystal deep blue clear ( Means observing tonight! ). Seeing is fair.

Coronado SolarMax II 90 DS. 32x, 44.5x and 64x ( Ha )
The first thing I notice is the plage to AR12776 is very easy to see and is V shaped NE-SE. I can easily see the spot too. I see a couple of filaments within it as well. I see no trace of AR12775 as it has now receded behind the western limb.

I see 5 filaments elsewhere on the disc. Three in the north and two in the S-SW. I see few prominences in single-stack. The most prominent being on the SE limb. The northernmost of these trails up northward. I can see the spicule layer on the limb and the mottling is visible across the disc with moderate contrast.

Celestron NexStar 102GT w/Altair wedge and 540nm+UV/IR cut filter. 55x and 110x ( WL )
I can see 1 sunspot complete with penumbra. The umbra has gotten itself together and is oval in shape. I see 6 pores trailing off to the southeast. Better seeing would have yielded better results. I cannot see the facular component that surrounds them in AR12776. I can see granulation in the first session but seeing has obliterated it in the second.

Carpe Noctem!

James

I am glad to see you back Jochen. I haven’t seen you on SolarChat much lately. AR12776 has things on the Sun livened up a little bit.

Thanks, James.

Yeah, I haven't been posting much, but have been lurking to see what's going on with our parent star though ;). We're going through a pretty bad patch of weather here (haven't seen the Sun in about a month now), so focussing on other hobbies instead (nature photography mainly, autumn is always nice).

But I'm sure things will shift sooner or later and the scopes will get some light again :)

Nice report James, hope you had a good run viewing at night too.

How dark are the night skies where you are?

It is an interesting shape, and great to see such a large and developed spot too, thanks for the report James :hamster:

It's actually still quite small. We just aren't used to seeing many spots lately!

Shame you didn't spot the beginning of AR(2777) today in the far S.W. corner as is now a Sun-spot, whilst it remains in view.

Great reports from you james and thanks vm

Not bad. I can easily see the Milky Way. But they are getting brighter. Back in the 80's and before we really had nice skies but since then everything has built up. People moving in from everywhere. New LED lighting has not helped either. I think in 10 years the Milky Way will be invisible here unless you go into the mountains. The whole east coast is slowly becoming a washout. The western US is the best bet. I made a visit to the Galisteo Basin in New Mexico back in 2016 and was astounded how dark the skies were. The Milky Way wasn't this pale band across the sky but a truly cloudlike tangible band of white. And the detail it had with the naked eye was astounding. I saw parts of it in Scorpius/Sagittarius I had never seen before. Even from the Parkway high in the mountains near home back in 84'. A close friend of mine was in the army back in the mid 1980's and was practicing maneuvers at PTA off of Saddle Road on the big island of Hawaii. He said that place had such dark skies you lost your way. The familiar constellations were broken up by so many stars you got lost. I guess that's why they put an observatory on Mauna Kea which is near there. :)

Light pollution is a pig push for one to get into solar. And it seems more cloudy than it used to be. Climate change. Global warming.

I mostly viewed Mars. I did ok. I got the major albedo features but could not see the great volcanoes. I did get them a few times in the past with my 6" F8 Criterion reflector. Tonight I used my NexStar C102, AT72EDII and 6" Criterion Dynascope.
