Hello everyone...

The Zoom meeting was great!!!

It was an excellent opportunity to see everyone live (in the virtual sense) and meet some members for the first time and re-acquaint with others that COVID has prevented in person meeting. Thanks to everyone who help set up the session and those who joined in.

Looking forward to more session...we need to decide a time line and plan from there.

A request...there was discussion of CMOS vs CCD sensors, lost track of who mentioned a specific discussion by someone with the last name White (may have been Pedro), but was hoping that a link to the subject could be posted.

Take care everyone,
Brian

All,
I really enjoyed the meeting of the minds on Zoom today. I really enjoy being in the company of other who love solar observing as I do and the majority of you have more experience on the Sun than I do. So I am in a good group to learn. And Steven, you don't live really that far from me and we are gonna have to meet up sometime.

BIG thumbs up to Jack, Pedro, Steven, Brian, Franco, Alexandra, Rainer and all the others for a fun and educational virtual meet-up!

I need to get a CCD camera while they are still available before the CMOS ones take completely over.

Hi James,

Why ?

The main advantage of CCD vs CMOS is in DSO imaging not Sun imaging. IMHO when it comes to SNR values ...

As far as I have learned CCD has the advantage in binning that the noise is not summed up as when you bin a CMOS camera.

That is what I have been told at NEAF 2018 while talking to camera technician and developper from QHY ...

All IMHO

I have a lot to learn on such things Rainer. It seems that many solar imagers prefer the CCD cameras over the CMOS ones. I have no direct experience with either except for DSLR cameras and CMOS works great on those. I am quite ignorant on such things. I can learn much from you and others here.

Hi James,

Well I have for H-alpha a Lumenera Infinity 2-2M camera with 1616x1216 pixels, 4.4 micron and it makes maximum 12 frames per second and is a CCD chip. Why CCD chip ? Very simple I bought it, what ? maybe 14 years ago ?

I also have a ZWO 290MM Cool (discontinued) with 1936 x 1096 pixels, 2.9 micron and it takes maximum ~ 80 frames per second. This one bought 2 years ago.

For what will you use the camera in question ?

Hi James,

That is going to be a tough decision which camera to buy.

All opinions I have read are split. Som advocate for big pixels, others speed, other size of image Minipixel or Megapixel :-)

If you look at all camera producers no one really advertizes a camera for Solar imaging

¿ too complicated ?

In any case I would say look for a Monochrome camera. Bayer Matrix kills sensitivity ...

Look at my H-alpha images taken at 12 frames per seocnd and I guess they are OK. Why do I mention it ? Perhaps an ASI 174MM would be good choice with 5.86 micron pixels ... and look below it makes 128 fps at full 12 bit and full image size :o at an exposure time of about 7 ms.

Now comes the famous question of undersampling or oversampling. Let me be honest, I have never understood that ...

In any case as usual you will make mistakes by buying your first camera. After the fifth you are a bit smarter

Rainer

PD Speaking about camera producer and announcing camera for Sun imaging I found this

https://astronomy-imaging-camera.com/product/asi174mm
" BRAND NEW! ASI174MM/MC is our new camera designed especially for Sun and Moon imaging. "
