October 29 2020 Observations

Post by DeepSolar64 »

Session time is 12:16pm to 12:55pm EDT local time ( US ). Skies are partly cloudy and the temp is 79F. Breezy. Seeing is a bit above average.

Coronado SolarMax II 60 DS 16x and 21.5x ( WL )
AR12778 in the SW is easily seen. It's plage is broken up into two sections. I can see a filament within. We have a new AR just to the NE of it and that is AR12779. It is easy also. I can see the spots within both of these ARs. Well to the north I can see a large disturbance nearing the limb. It contains one snaking long filament. I can see a chain of filaments in the NE quadrant snaking to a filaprom on the NE limb. I also see a faint filament in the far south.

I see several proms around the limb but nothing spectacular. The best one is the filaprom on the NE limb. I see a faint forest of proms below it.

I had trouble getting on band today but once I did the contrast on the mottles was fair.

Orion 70mm Solar Telescope. 25x, 41.5x and 62.5x ( WL )
All together in the same area the spots of AR12778/9 are a sight to behold. I counted nearly two dozen spots/pores in the group. Many are close together and within the penumbra of another. It's really hard to get an accurate count. I can see the faculae faintly surrounding them. The umbra of the largest spot in AR12779 is crescent-shaped. I can also see the facular component of the large disturbance seen in Ha nearing the NW limb. I see no pores in it. Granulation is easy today.

Lunt 8x32 SUNoculars ( WL ).
I can see the spot groups easily in the two SW active regions though they appear small in the binoculars.

Carpe Lumen!

James

Thanks for the report James, i've been away from home for a week and have missed the sun. Looks like i'm not going to get to observe these active regions before they disappear. Let's hope they're the first of many more which Stereo would seem to suggest.

Solar activity does seem to be picking up. Hopefully you will have time to observe soon.

They will be far more useful with increasing activity.
