November 14 2020 Observations
Session time is from 10:15am to 11:00am EST local time ( US ). Temp is 55F. Skies are clear and the seeing is only fair.
Coronado Solarmax II 60 DS 16x and 21.5x ( Ha )
I can see three active area plages. AR12781 is almost on the SW limb with it's single spot and AR12782 is in the SE. I can see a filament held within it's bowl shaped plage. North of it another weaker AR shows a filament within. Elsewhere on the disc I see three filaments in the far north, four east-southeast of AR12782 and one SE of AR12781.
I see prominences in all four corners. SE, NE, NW and SW. The SW ones are the brightest and show an extension on the northernmost one reaching southward. Two in the SE look like short windswept bushes though they are tiny in the SMII60. The NE ones are small but easy. The one in the NW is fainter and more difficult but still visible.
The mottles are fairly soft today in contrast but are still easily seen covering the solar disc.
Orion 70mm Solar Telescope. 25x and 50x ( WL )
I can see the faculae and spot of AR12781 nearing the SW limb. The Wilson effect is seen strongly in the spot. I can still also make out both penumbra and umbra. The faculae itself seems more tattered and spread out than the more winding form it took yesterday. I can very faintly see the faculae of AR12782 in the SE. No pores are seen there. I can with some difficulty see the fine solar granulation covering the disc.
Carpe Diem!
James

Hi James,
Your solar scopes are doing great showing you great details. Over here in Singapore I heard from a local visual solar observer that he is not able to see much of AR 12781 in WL. I will tell him about your observation on the umbra and penumbra on AR 12781. Thanks for your report.

I typically use 2 scopes for white light. An Orion70 ( glass filter ) and a Celestron 102 ( Altair wedge ). Both of these scopes do quite well with of course the C102 doing the best in good seeing. I usually have no trouble seeing decent detail in these and they will both show granulation during good seeing with the C102 doing the better job. I will occasionally use my Astro-Tech AT72EDII apochromatic refractor with the wedge and my old Traq 60mm refractor with Baader solar film. Even the 40 year old Traq will resolve the penumbra and umbra of a sunspot.
I wonder what scope he is using? Maybe he just needs better seeing conditions.

Thanks for your response.
He is using a Orion 70mm Solar Telescope. I think it is a f/7.1 refractor. He is working it at x25 and x50 for WL observation. Seeing has not been great and better seeing would certainly help.

Re: November 14 2020 Observations
That sounds like the same little refractor that I use. It has a built in non removable glass filter which gives an almost white image. Mine is F7.1 and came with two eyepieces which give 25x and 50x. Mine works surprisingly well considering the low price of the scope. I paid 133 bucks for it on Amazon.
Good seeing can make a lot of difference! He can also try higher magnifications given good seeing. My little scope can take over 100x seeing permitting.
