January 20 2021 Observations

Post by DeepSolar64 »

Session time is 10:35am to 12:39pm EST local time ( US ). Skies are clear. The temp is 39 degrees F at noon. The seeing is a bit below average.

Coronado SolarMax II 90 DS. 32x. 44.5x and 66.5x ( Ha )
I can see a thin but easy filament in the SW and another darker but smaller one in the south-central area of the disc. In the SE I can see another easy filament associated with AR12797. I see a couple more smaller ones in the vicinity. I see three small " dotlike " filaments south of AR12797. I see no filaments in the northern hemisphere.

The plage of AR12797 is easily seen with the dual sunspot in the NW corner of the complex. I see no trace of the plage to AR12796 in the west.

Even in doublestack I can see a few proms. The SW limb shows several with the middle one being the easiest to see. It looks like a stubby column. The SE limb shows a group that looks to me like little tornados! I also see a couple on the NE limb

The mottles are visible across the disc without difficulty. below average seeing makes the limb spicule layer hard to see.

Celestron NexStar 120GT w/Altair wedge and 540nm filter. 50x and 83x ( WL )
I can see six spots in AR12797 in the SE. The two large over-and-under spots with easy penumbrae and two smaller spots due east. East of these are two more tiny pores that I can see only during moments of better seeing. I may have glimpsed a seventh. Not sure on that. The faculae to the system can still be seen.

I see no other faculae or spots/pores on the disc. I can see the granulation but seeing has it soft and easiest only toward disc center.

Carpe Diem!

James

Thanks James for the report and the SDO image well-shows the layout of the AR2797 spots

Also the large close-up's are so much easier for me to see, so thanks for that.

Regards
Terry

Great to hear you can see all this, take a good look at the NE for this incoming hotspot on Terry's post over the next day or so :)

It's a start. Now if we can get spottage in more places than just the southeast. " Spottage ". I like that term...
