March 3 2021 Observations

Post by DeepSolar64 »

Session time is from 10:50am until 12:00 noon EST local time ( US ) Skies are clear with fair to maybe just above average seeing. The temperature is 54F.

Coronado SolarMax II 90 DS. 32x and 44.5x ( Ha )
First off I can see the small plages of AR12806 on the south-central disc and AR12807 in the southeast quadrant of the disc. I see only two filaments on the disc. An easy one in the far north and another in the SW that joins a prominence to be a filaprom! I can see a few small prominences around the disc with the SW filaprom and an eastern prom being the easiest to see. None are anywhere near spectacular. The mottles are easily seen today.

Astro-Tech AT72EDII w/Altair wedge and 540nm filter. 24x and 72x ( WL )
During moments of good seeing I can see practically every spot and pore in the spot groups of AR12806 and AR12807. SDO still out resolves me but not by much. I can see the granulation easily today.

I did do a little imaging today. I edited one immediately. I will do more later this evening and upload them here.

Carpe Diem!

James

Lovely captures and update James. Two nice sunspot groups, hopefully they may grow. Thanks for sharing.

Nice report and capture James. At work, cloud and grey for me today, hoping for clear skies at the weekend - getting nearer now!

Mark

Thanks! I just need to figure a way to make the plages stand out more in my images. The colorize function in GIMP seems to make them blend in too much. They need to “ pop “ and stand out. Look at Pedro Re’s. His plages stand out in a bold yellow against an orange background.

So much to learn I have.

James.

Seems to me you have raised the black point to increase contrast - you can see how it 'eats into' the limb, however you've not dragged the white point in - Pedros plage jump out because the levels are clipped (or very close to clipping).

You are an observant one Mr. Townley. I did raise the black point to darken the background. I must have raised it too much. White point? I’ll have to find that in GIMP.

Thanks Mark.

James.
