CaK Full Disk and Polar Jets - 27th March
Hi All!
The weekend weather was forecast to be poor apart from a brief spell just after sunrise, it's a situation i'm all too familiar with in spring with the rising temperatures, clouds just bubble up not long after the sun comes up... I checked meteoblue which was saying seeing of 3", however I thought i'd try the 60mm at f16, i'm glad I did as the seeing was quite a bit better than this with quite a stable image on the screen, maybe 1.5" i'd estimate. Transparency was good in a sky filling rapidly with clouds growing in size rapidly scudding past and I only managed to get 2 short captures before it was completely clouded out, fortunately this was all I needed for the full disk.
Calcium is going to be my pet project this year, and phase 1 is establishing tuning of the filters using a skybender to get them on band. I've found when this is the case the spicules and proms are quite easy to see. This is the case with this disk, and is most definitely worth double clicking for a look full size in your favourite chroma. In particular if you look around the northern polar region (one o'clock position) you can see how the spicule jets diverge away from the suns magnetic north pole following the field lines.

And the Solar Dynamics Observatory image from the same time. No spicules or jets there, NASA should get themselves on solarchat, we could save them a whole load of money and improve their data

Hope everyone has had a good weekend.

Re: CaK Full Disk and Polar Jets - 27th March
Great ones Mark.
( I was all go for a session yesterday morning, clear blue skies. Hit the sun first time ( well top left of sensor on a 174 ). From then on it was downhill with problems of network, scope connecting then failing, focuser connecting then failing. Cloud bubbled and closed the blue for the afternoon.... Sheesh! I'm trying an Ascom re-install for a cure I hope! )

p.s. You said Polar Jets, was expecting you to be having 'problems' with them on Earth...............

These turned out great Mark: first time I see spicules in CaK.

The spicule layer is indeed phenomenal Mark and I like the rose colour too, you did a much better job than me. I must work on my colour

Re: CaK Full Disk and Polar Jets - 27th March
Mark,
These CaK images are stunning! Among the best I have seen. While the SDO AIA 1700 image shows the supergranulation as yours does it does not show the spicules at all! The disc is also more uniform and better lit in yours. Impressive work. you have kicked SDO's ass!!
And I so want an CaK module. I would use it on my AT72EDII and my C102. I can use the ASI178MM camera to see and image it now.

Superb detail, Mark, with such a small aperture. Great disc.

Re: CaK Full Disk and Polar Jets - 27th March
As Alto referred to "Polar Jets" too, don't even go there Mark, as have had enough problems diagnosing a scenario with a General Aviation aircraft and its' electrical-system today, so your heading rang a bell - so to speak... !!!

I also must look through my archive material - as your Cak image shows what we could achieve "yonks" ago.

So Mark, Do you remember this one of yours posted on Spaceweather.com around 14-4-2010 ??
My first impression for naming the prom-image is "Mark's Creature from Outer-Space - Roasting on Our Sun" !!!
Truly an outstanding capture and processed/colouring Mark and you were 10-years younger then... !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Keep up the excellent captures and thanks for all your efforts too..
