April 20 2021 Observations. Visual and Imaging.

Post by DeepSolar64 »

Session time is 10:00am until 11:40am EDT local time ( US ). The skies are partly cloudy. Seeing is fair. The temperature is 63F.

Coronado SolarMax II 90 DS. 32x, 44.5x and 64x ( Ha )
I can see two bright obvious active regions today! AR12816 in the SW and the newly numbered AR12817 in the NW. Both show considerable detail in the spicule field surrounding them with the magnetic fields pushing them out and away. AR12817 shows a tiny filament immediately south of the plage. I can see a fainter plage east of AR12817. I can also see what is now just the mere disturbances of ARs 12814-15 in the SW. They are hardly visible at all. I can also see a new disturbance in the SE that bears a spot!

I can see two long filaments in the SE and another string SW of AR12816. There are also some large easy dark ones in the far north.

Prominences are good today too. A nice bright pair with a fainter connecting section in the SE and another close twin in the NE. I can also see a large faint one in the SW. I can see all the proms on the GONG CT image.

The spicule layer on the limb is visible and the mottles show good contrast today.

Orion 70mm Solar Telescope w/540nm filter 27.5x and 55x ( WL )
AR12817 shows a nice spot group that has developed well since yesterday. I can see the larger western spot has a double umbra surrounded by a penumbra. A cluster of smaller spots follow it. AR12816 shows an arch of 4 easy to see spots. The southernmost of these has a penumbra. I also see another spot near the SE limb that has faculae stretching off to it's south. I can faintly see the faculae to AR12817 in the NW and the departing AR12814-15 in the SW. I can see no faculae with AR12816 which would indeed be difficult since it is away from the limb.

Granulation is visible.

I imaged in both Ha and WL as well.

Carpe Diem!

James

Thanks for your report, James.

Your imaging skills are really coming along great guns.

Thanks Stuart. I am slowly getting there but I still have quite a bit to learn. Using the histogram is one and I still haven't gotten good with using wavelets. Also most of my Ha discs are done in single stack. I have a hard time getting a evenly illuminated disc in doublestack. It looks good visually but not so much so in the camera.

Any tips in getting an evenly illuminated field using a tilt-tuned DS system would be appreciated. I could see much better contrast in the monitor but the unevenly lit field lacked aesthetics.

Thanks so much James for sharing your excellent captures - I'm getting envious of your talents, but will keep trying to get as good.

I'll reply your PM in a mo, as others there too.

Regards
Terry

Terry,
I am not that good but still a padawan learner. But thanks for the compliment. You have a much better setup than I do. An observatory with mounts that will track the sun. People like CS Jozef, Rainer, Eric, Mark T, Alexandra, Jochen and Stuart among other SolarChat greats are more deserving to be envious of...

My strength is in visual observing with Andrew.

You are welcome Maurits. Between weather and time I don't think I will be imaging this weekend. I'll probably be lucky to get a visual session in.

Great report and images James! Even double stack images are a bit of a holy grail in solar, the camera is much more revealing than the eye with gradients...

I can easily see more detail on the monitor in DS but getting the disc uniform has been something I haven't figured out yet. Getting the etalons tilted right to work together. Easy visually but difficult photographically it seems.
